Hi all,

I am contemplating to change my current vet school (University of Queensland) to another vet school. May I know which vet school accepts transfer students?

Your best bet would be to contact the schools you're interested in specifically and ask them if they accept transfer students and under what circumstances. That said, I was curious, so I did a 5 minute google search and found the following. I didn't want to spend forever searching, so I only got a few schools that came up right away and all of them are in the US. Maybe other people can add to the list.

You would have to ask each school. Some of the schools do not accept any international students in the first place, so I highly doubt those would accept an international transfer. The best thing for you to do is to email the admissions department of each vet school you are considering.

Ummm..I don't know about this. You would need to have satisfactorily fullfilled the pre-reqs. Not all require a degree to attend, some only require pre-req completion. I know med schools in the states generaly say they will not consider foreign pre-reqs...not sure about vet.

When you say that you are an undergraduate...you are in vet school correct? Australia and other international schools consider the vet degree a bachelor's degree and i do not think that will inhibit you transferring if you meet the prerequisite requirements. US schools do accept students without a bachelor's degree.

I completed only 2 years of my vet schooling and now I am doing my 3rd year

Aussie and the UK consider veterinary medicine...and human medicine for that matter as bachelor's degrees. When you graduate, you do not receive a DVM or MD, hence why those students do not assume the title "Doctor." Unlike us Americans who somehow end up being professional students because we have to do 4 years of college before professional school, Aussie and UK students enter "professional studies" right after high school.. they have more focused training the last two years of high school and then take special exams (A levels or OPs I believe they are called in the respective countries)...hence why most programs are 5 years. The first two years essentially equal one year back here.

As for the OP, if you want to transfer to an American school, you will somehow have to take the GRE, and somehow prove you have enough training...UQ(I studied abroad there a year ago 🙂 ) is not AVMA approved, so they may have trouble comparing classes/ with class equivalency...but it can't hurt to ask the schools you are interested in. Massey is 5 year program and AVMA accredited, so you may have an easier time with adjusting as they are both 5 years. Edinburgh, RVC, and Glasgow are similar as well. I have been considering reapplying to US schools again while doing a year at Glasgow, but I am pretty sure I would have to start all over, rather than transfer in as a second year. Either way, I have 5 years ahead of me...

Contact the registrar at Massey and talk to them. it is the only way you will get the very specific information you will need.

Massey definitely accepts transfers. I am unaware of the process or who to contact, but I know of a student who transferred last year from Murdoch. She was/is a NZ resident however so I don't know how that would fit in. But yes, give them a ring at Massey. 🙂

Also, Murdoch accepts transfers as well. We had a UQ student transfer into our class last year (3rd year, class of 2011).

I know students who have transferred from UQ to Uni of Sydney and also Murdoch. So give those a try. I think it would be best for you to call Massey and speak to someone from there directly and request some further information.

Just FYI, In Australia (not sure about the UK) although we get a Bachelor of Veterinary Science, instead of a DVM, we still assume the title 'Doctor'. 🙂

I know you're looking at Massey, but I inquired to Melbourne uni earlier in the year as my partner had been made redundant and there were more jobs in Melbourne, but because of their "Melbourne model" thing you would have to start back in first year. I told them politely where to go and am glad I'm staying.
