Hello,
I am a junior in high school, and interested in a veterinary career. I was researching and came across the 4 year veterinary technology degree at Purdue. Would anyone recommend doing this program along with the prevet curriculum to prepare for vet school? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I saw someone write once that getting a vet tech degree in preparation for vet school is like getting a nursing degree to go to med school... doesn't really happen so much (but can). The vet tech programs dont seem to be as competitive as some of the undergrad schools and programs that pre-vets attend and alot of your vet tech programs aren't at 4-year colleges/universities so that might be looked down by the admissions committee. Personally I would recommend looking into an animal science degree, or even some other bachelor's degrees that spark your interest (chemistry, biology, and other science oriented degrees seem to fit well with the veterinary pre-reqs) at a competitive 4-year school. The more competitive your undergrad courses/school are/is the better you'll look come application time (providing that you do well in those courses 😉 )

Good luck!

That's a good point.

Thank you for your help. 🙂 I will stick with one of the majors that you suggested.

Actually you might stand out from the crowd if you major in something totally different, like english literature, but still do all your prereqs and do well in them. Just a thought...
