Anyone on SDN considered a vet microbiology residency/PhD program? Pros and cons? Job outlook? Have spoken with some professors at school but want to get as much information as possible.

Currently am in my final year of vet school. I like research and am seriously considering a PhD but am seeking career paths in which my vet degree won't be (completely??) wasted (ie trying not to do stuff that I could have done with a PhD alone).

I've considered it, but to be honest, like you I don't know much about it. I can't really imagine why a veterinarian would need to become boarded in microbiology or what a veterinary microbiologist would do that a PhD microbiologist couldn't.

So, you're not alone in either the interest or confusion. I've actually been meaning to look up their website and try to find out more about it but have just been too distracted 🙂
