Hello Everyone,

I am very interested in going into veterinary pathology. I'll be applying to vet schools (again) this year and I'm wondering if anybody is aware of veterinary schools that offer a track/focus area in pathology?

Also, is it more difficult to secure a residency after vet school if you've attended a non-tracking school vs. a tracking school? 😕

Thanks!

Hi! I'm a third year anatomic pathology resident 🙂

I went to VMRCVM which has a "public/corporate" track, which allowed me to do more path electives as well as more path-type rotations in veterinary school.

I don't think tracking helps or hurts in terms of residency competitiveness - what they are really interested in is how well you do in the path courses that you take, and that you pursue path-related extracurriculars and electives. If you can squeeze some research in as well, that's great, because path can often lend itself very well to research.

Are you interested in clinical, anatomic, or both? I know many schools have an after-hours clin path tech job that students can get - I did that for a year or so.

Examples of what I did:

Took as many pathology electives as I could (and did well)
Worked as an after-hours clin path technician for a year and a half or so
Did a summer internship with a vet pathology group in another state
Worked other summers and breaks doing research
Went to path rounds as often as possible and networked with the pathologists and residents (very important!)
