Has anyone here applied for the Veterinary Student Trainee job with the USDA? It seems like a great opportunity for those interested in pathology or the food safety aspect of food animal medicine. Is there much competition for the jobs? I applied, but since I'm a first year student I don't have much of a resume yet.

Has anyone done this or had any other type of student federal job?

In June, I did a one-week externship with the USDA APHIS in NJ, and it was a very good experience. I'm glad I did it. It was unpaid, but goes toward fulfilling graduation requirements for KSU (we must complete three externships prior to graduation).

The externship was not official beyond that.. i.e. it did not count as government work or anything beyond the actual experience. With that said, again, I learned and saw a great deal, and it's given me alot to think about.

After I applied for this job back in November, I was not contacted until shortly before school was out for summer. Unfortunately, I had already made other summer work plans. I had expected them to contact me late, but not that late.

So if you do apply for something like this, keep in mind it may take a long time for them to contact you.
