Can dentists buy vicodin from the manufacturer and keep it in their office and give it to patients that need it?

Yes. But for a number of liability and potential abuse problems it's not recommended. Much better to just numb that patient up with a LONG acting anesthestic such as 0.5% Marcaine with 1:200,000 epi which should give that patient more than enough time to get to the pharmacy to get that script for Vicodin filled ON THEIR OWN

Even if you kept some in your office in a lock box where only you knew the combo/had the key for it, the liability issues can become too great

Pharmacies are being held up at gunpoint because of drug users looking for a fix. I would think a dental office would be an even easier target.

They're making it harder and harder for dentists (and doctors) to be dispensers. I would definitely not go down that route

And you want to do this, why?
You've got the power of preventing the threshold of action potentials. Unless you want to be a drug dealer, stick to local anesthetics and prescription paper.

Depending on the type of practice that you have, you may have other controlled substances stored in your office that require a lockbox and if so, I don't think adding a few Vicodin will have much of an effect on your liability insurance or risk of being robbed.

However, 800 mg of Ibuprofen along with the previously mentioned long acting LA should tide your patients over until they are able to fulfill their prescription. This is what I do for thirds, FMX's, alveoloplasty's, tori removal, infections etc. It should more than cover what you will typically encounter as a GP.
