Do you think they are really beneficial to the aspiring dentist in terms of hand-eye-coordination, manual dexterity, etc.

Because I'm thinking about buying an Xbox 360 along with Halo 3 later this year. 😀

EDIT: Or should I say, "how" beneficial...

Well my interviewer at NYU last year complimented me when I mentioned I was an avid gamer on the ever so popular "tell me about yourself" question. And then he asked me how my video gaming relates to dentistry. As soon as he asked me that, I knew I was IN lol.

I would pick up a more productive hobby to talk about in an interview.

Haha, right on! I'm impressed you had the guts to mention that.

I remember reading that surgeons who played video games for a total of 3 hours per week made 33% less mistakes. It may have been one hour per week. I read the study back in High School for a research paper so I don't remember the exact hours/week, but I am positive the percentage of less error was 33. Either way, in my opinion, that is a pretty big difference.

Also, I'm a bigger fan of the PS3. It is just a better machine with free online, built in wireless, bluray, bluetooth, and rechargable controllers. Most games are going multi-platform now as well, so there won't be many games for 360 you wont be able to get for PS3.

If you get a 360 though I would get Gears of War 2, Mass Effect, and Bioshock. Those are my favorite 360 games. In terms of shooters my preference goes- GoW2>COD>Halo.

You sound like a Games salesman 😀

You just convinced me to buy a PS3 (but after I become a dentist ).

Ditto. Anyway, my folks are not digging the xbox idea now, so guess I'll have to wait later. That is, if I have time left over for it or my hobbies don't change in the next 8 years.

actually video games help a ton with visual tracking and hand eye coordination, as well as a steady hand. If you ask someone who has never picked up a controller to play a 360 game, it would be a like a child learning to use their hands for the first time. Also it forces you to make many quick decisions and use your hands and eyes rapidly in unison to execute those decisions.

Yeah... the first time I played a first person shooter game, I got stuck and couldn't get around the corner. It's tricky using one toggle thing to "look" and another to "move"! I'm getting better but the first time I played L4D with my boyfriend, I had trouble getting to the boat or whatever it was at the very end of the campaign thing, went in the wrong direction and got ambushed by zombies... I'm improving though, really. =)

Playing Videogames would definately improve hand-eye coordination and reflex speed for a fact... but im not sure if the interviewers(usually nerds) would really appreciate that!

I agree. Gaming is one activity I will not be writing on my application.

Was he laughing or cursing when you ran the wrong way?

I knew playing Call of Duty would help me someway! now that Ii think of it, it helps visually and hand coordination! great excuse to play during study breaks! 🙂

has anyone put it in their application under extra curriculars? ive had my fair share of gaming and played quite seriously in many tournaments and such. it'd be pretty awesome if i could add that to my application. what do you guys think?

I've seen it on multiple applications, I personally think it's fine. IMO clinical skill is directly correlated to Guitar Hero skill.

Then I'm gonna have some sick clinical skillz 😀 (and still be a huge nerd 🙁)

I like this post 🙂. I play Call of Duty 4 on PS3 and im ranked in the world, i was 800 2 months ago n i dropped to 1160 bc i was studyin for my DAT then went on a vacation after takin it 🙂. I do think it improves everything plus its fun. I only play with a sniper so its even more challengin n needs lots of skills. Didnt put that on my application bc i was afraid that they ll wonder y i had the time to spend that much time on a game n not to do better in my classes or volunteer work or wutever 🙂

I played my share of video games.. and RPG..

Mass effect, Halo, Runescape, guitar hero, super smash bro, and that doctor game where u do surgeries with the wii?.. still play whenever i go back home for a small break 🙂.

Bring it. I will challenge you in the student lounge on your interview day, and the outcome will determine whether you are accepted or not.

 You will prolly beat me.
I do well on expert except for the endgame metallica/slayer type stuff. If you can do that then you got me beat.

I'm picturing it in my head looking like that scene from the movie Grandma's Boy when they are challenging each other at different video games.

There's only one game I would bet my acceptance on and that is nhl 09. I have the sickest virtual hands in the league, lol. (And yes, I am the biggest nerd evah).

Its not fair! Due to my kids I'm stuck with lego batman and wii bowling:'(. No zombie hunting war games for me!

Haha, he laughed and then ran back to help me. He killed enough of the zombies so that I should have been able to run and follow him but somehow I got stuck by a tree or something... I don't remember, but the next thing I knew the zombies were all on me again and there's a time limit before the boat leaves so... he couldn't come back for me and I died. =\ I have improved greatly since then. Haha.
