I too matched at VCU. I really liked the program on my interview and am quite happy to be going there. I know there were several reviews put on SDN knocking the program, however I interviewed with several of these people and did not get the same "bad vibe" that they did. I also have classmates that will be going there.
Positives- Rather than a regular call schedule, there is a night float system. Moonlighting is available within the institution starting during your 2nd year. All of the residents seemed quite happy and I liked all of the attendings that I met. Critical care fellowship. Nice town with a southern feel (if you like that sort of thing, I am from Louisiana, so I did)
Negatives- no liver transplant, which I do not want to deal with in real life, but they can set you up with a rotation if you so desire. No pain fellowship currently, which I may want to do.
The program is a 4 year program with the CBY built in- it is similar to a transitional year in many aspects. If I recall correctly board scores were at the national average. I feel that I will get excellent training at this facility and enjoy myself while I am there. There is also much to do if you like the outdoors and DC is not too far away.
Where is your friend from TF?
