The posted average GPA for UVa is 3.75. For VCU it is a 3.6 and for EVMS it is 3.44.

My question is do in-state applicants have lower admissions standards than their fellow out-of-state applicants?

UVa's class is composed of 57% in-state students
VCU's class is composed of 56% in-state students

It is clearly an advantage to be an in-state applicant since the application pool is significantly smaller in-state vs. out-of-state, but would in-state GPA for UVa be around a 3.65? 3.7? VCU GPA be around a 3.5/3.55?

Thanks for the input as I'm trying to gauge where I stand currently as a current sophomore in-state student only applying to in-state VA schools.

most instate schools are easier to get in if your instate..
so yes.. they might have lower grades

Hm, I wouldn't think that the average stats are significantly lower for in-state. I think the rest of your application matters... I didn't get into either UVA or VCU with a 3.8... one of my friends with a 3.98 (3.95 sGPA) didn't get into UVA either, while getting into a few of the top 10 schools. We were both in-state. Maybe we were two of the oddballs, but in our case at least, GPA alone wasn't too helpful a gauge.

Also... I'm not sure about anyone else, I'd suggest applying to a lot more than just 3 schools!

theres a theory that schools avoid taking too many people with high grades like your because they know they can get into a better establishment like one of the top 20.
but who knows..

thanks for all your help as I'm trying to figure out what I'm gonna do for med school I have a 3.73 right now with research -- honor council executive -- SGA Senator. It'd be very interesting to be able to sit in on admission committee meetings at various schools to see what goes on and why things like that happen because with a 3.9+ in-state you think you'd be golden at UVA and almost any other medical school in the country with solid MCAT scores and good ec.

I think the MCAT is pretty important to UVa at least too...I think its matriculated avg. is somewhere around 34, which is pretty high. Try to shoot for at least that.
