Does anyone know of any success stories where a resident on J1 visa switched to H1b after passing step 3 during residency training? I am from Canada, and don't even really need a special visa to be in the States but for tax purposes need one.

The J1 visa is not as attractive to me due to its inhibition to switch specialty after 2 years of training, has anyone been able to do that under special circumstances?

You can't switch from j1 to h1b mid-training.

Agreed, can't switch from a J to an H.

Don't understand your statement, though. If you don't need a visa, then don't get one. Either you need a visa to work in the US, or you don't. Taxes have nothing to do with it.
