VMRCVM Students? Housing?

Hello,
I'm hoping to apply to Vet school for the 2012 semester (a recent transferred pushed my graduation back from this spring til next Dec). I'm really wanting to go to VMRCVM. I'm 22 and I'm married to a man who is currently serving in the military.
We're not sure if he'll be getting out of the service when I go to Vet school or not yet.
I was just wondering if anybody attending the school could give me some advice on local housing and costs of living. I'd love to be able to find a roomate so that I would always have someone to study with - but since I'm married I've always just lived with my husband. The next 2 years are so unsure I really wanted to start getting info ASAP.

SO Blacksburg is pretty cheap and there's lots of apartment complexes in addition to great town homes and local houses. I'm from the area and went to Radford for my undergrad but I lived in Blacksburg one year with my now husband then moved to RU. I'm applying to VMRCVM this year actually. The average rent for a 1 BR apt is around 500. And a 4 BR for example is around 1200 so each person pays around 300. The bus system is quite good and goes to most of the apartment complexes in the area. I too will have to live apart from my husband because he's in med school a few hours away. I think it's pretty easy to find roommates through the rentals.

Blacksburg really is my favorite place 😍

To contradict hahatoofunny22 a little bit:

While the bus system is okay for the university, it does not go to the vet school and would definitely require some bus changes to even get close. There are a few complexes and a neighborhood within okay biking or walking distance but I absolutely would not want to rely on that or buses in the winter.

As for the relative expense of Blacksburg--that depends on where you are coming from. Most NOVA and Maryland students find it to be pretty cheap. Christiansburg typically has cheaper housing and may actually be closer time-wise to the vet school than some Blacksburg areas.

Most students live w/in a 25 mile radius and I think you need to be w/in 20 for 4th year. There was a housing list that went out about a month after acceptance letters and many people found roommates through either that or facebook.

The housing list is indeed pretty helpful. In terms of location, I lived in Blacksburg for 8 years (undergrad and vet school) so if you have any specific location questions, feel free to PM. 500 is a bit cheap on average for a one bedroom - I would wager the average at being more like 550 unless you're talking East Roanoke Street (my home for two years in a tiny ghetto complex surrounded by frat houses, lol).

I loved living farther out of town, myself. I lived the last 2 years of vet school in a old but cute 2 bedroom trailer about 12-15 min from school, with acres of fenced land, super quiet, for 550/mo.

Some apartment complexes are crazy, some are fine. Foxridge is expensive, but quiet, for example. So is Windsor Hills. Then there are party centrals like Terrace View. We have a few small duplex communities too that are nice.

And the bus system sucks if you want to use it to go to the vet school, because it doesn't stop there.

I am also applying to VMRCVM this year, and if I am accepted will have to live away from my husband, too. We live in Richmond, and own a house there, etc. So it's not feasible for him to relocate with me. I'm glad there are some other people doing the same thing.🙂

I currently live in Christiansburg, and I'm 10 minutes from the vet school. My husband and I moved here for his job, and the proximity to VMRCVM happens to be a nice coincidence. Since we're in our upper 20s, we did not want to be surrounded by college students, and while some live in our neighborhood (Oaktree), it's nice and quiet here.

If you get in, the school will help you find housing. In the meantime, there are lots of places around, and you can find lots of information online. We've been pretty happy with Townside Realtors.

PS- Having lived in Pittsburgh PA, Raleigh NC, and the mountains of NC, the cost of living here is pretty cheap 😀

http://web.offcampuspartners.com/5 is also a great place to find roommates and places, it is Tech's off campus website. You have to filter through the undergrads but most people will post if they are looking for grad students or mature roomies. You have to have a VT PID and password to log in, so you can't check that out yet, but it will be there waiting if you get in. You won't have a hard time finding living situations, there are plenty of options.

Congrats on NAVLE! Almost done! Lab services is a fun rotation, especially if Sponenberg or Saunders is on.

Am not a fan of Texas, but I do adore my job and my colleagues. It's a wonderful residency program. And yeah, our winters may be mild, but we pay for it in the summer 😱 😉
