Hey guys,

I wanted to check to see if I have the expected number of hours for Clinical, Community service and Research experience. I am applying next cycle ( I graduated two weeks ago) and these hours include the hours I will have completed by next June when I'll submit my primary.

-Clinical: 985 Hours( 500 Hours from paid employment). If shadowed is included then 1300+.
-Community Service: 850 Hours
-
Research: 750 Hours

*I have multiple different activities( 4-5) for clinical and community service.

Additionally,
1.) I am planning on keeping a publication as its own category so for the hours portion what should I include?
2.) I held a leadership position in 2 of my 5 community service projects , so should I classify these two as leadership or community service?

Thanks @Catalystik @gonnif @LizzyM @Goro @Moko

As long as you can talk about them meaningfully that's more than enough of everything, in fact it seems quite good! For the pub, you can either just put 1 or 2 hours, or you can put the number of hours you spent preparing it if you were involved in writing, editing, etc. For the leadership positions it probably doesn't matter, but I've heard that some schools will stratify your app based on the categories that you select. So if you don't have any other leadership maybe put one or both as leadership, but if you have other strong leadership positions keep them as CS, but again it probably doesn't matter they'll see what you write anyways.

Your planned activity hours look great. Any physician shadowing you do over 50 hours is unnecessary so long as you've included a primary care doc. The extra hours would be better spent in an activity that isn't passive.

1) I suggest entering zero Total Hours and including the prep time in the affiliated Research activity.

2) It depends. Can you separate out the hours that are solely leadership hours, list them separately without the associated community service hours (and not double count the hours), and still have a substantial number of hours for each space? If not, list it under Community Service, but include the name of the leadership role in the title you give the space.

I actually already did around 200 hours of primary care and 200 of oncologist shadowing because I shadowed both during different winter breaks and I went basically 8-5, 5 days a week for a month and a half for each haha. I did scribe for the primary care doc and translated for him during this time so it wasn’t just shadowing- although the scribing was on paper rather than a computer so it was a bit unorthodox.

So for my 2 community service activities which I said I held a leadership role in, I was the founder for one of them and I came in as a Supervisor for the second. So I held a leadership role for the duration of the time I was involved with them. I have a total of 5 Community service activities, and these would be 2 that were entirely leadership.

1) Best to leave the scribing under Employment-Clinical.

2) I think it would be fine, then, to list those two leadership activities (which were entirely "leadership") under Leadership-Not Listed Elsewhere, but to make clear they were also a community service through the title of the space +/or your narrative description.
