I was going to volunteer for my local Red Cross. What kind of volunteer work do you guys recommend? Also what would be a good goal of hours to shoot for before I apply?

DT, I am also wondering the same thing....

In addition, not to steal your post, but does anyone know how we prove our hours? Do I need to make an Excel spreadsheet and have a responsible party sign the sheet every time I volunteer? Or, is our word trusted? I am starting my first "structured" volunteer job on Monday. Any help would be appreciated!

Come on, some one has to know....?

Since noone has written ill give my opinion. I have no clue as im applying this year, but i think any type of volunteering is good. They want well rounded individuals (so i hear from young dentists). So anything will be better than nothing. Im sure some volunteering outside of medical field is looked heavily upon as well as in medical volunteering. Maybe get a little of both!!!

I would recommend that you have 30-40 hours of community service. I think its also important to have a record of service over the past several years and not just just the semester before you apply.

You don't have to "prove" that you put in the hours you say you did, but in most interviews they will ask probing questions about your service. I think it will be obvious if you just BS'ed it all.

Awesome Guys! Thank you very much for the help.

Hello,

I have a question about this too. It was sort of hinted in previous posts, but I have done some volunteer work in the ER. Do you think that the admissions committee will like this?

Thanks very much!

I think anything related to the health professions looks great on an application.
