I would start by thinking of areas of medicine that interest you, and focus on shadowing and or volunteering experiences thereof. I had a very good experience in ER medicine as far as clinical exposure. I think that goes for a few other non-trads here as per their posts. You may want to search "volunteer" on this non-trad forum.

contact some local academic docs (local med school) and see what they are researching, start with cardiology for example. see if you can volunteer on an ongoing project. often docs are more than happy to have a free hand around as long as you are people friendly, smart, etc.

if you are taking post bacs in school, check your college website for listings. i just received an email about volunteering with disabled soccer kids in the local soccer league. the experiences are there to be had. my college also regularly lists opportunities in local geriatric centers, students to simply teach older folks, who may have a certain level of dementia, how to use a computer, or play cards, or simply companionship.

another idea would be to think of national organizations in medical specialties that you have a soft spot for. for example, MS, MDA, Parkinson's Foundation. find the local office and make a phone call.

that should get you started,

This topic comes up pretty frequently over here. In [thread=555516]this thread[/thread] from a few months ago, there is more discussion of hospital-based volunteer work.
