I'm about to start volunteering at a very well known medical center (#6 in the country). BUT, they do not offer any research opportunities. There are two hospitals that I know of that have both volunteer work and research. And I'm wondering if it is better to do both within the hospital?

P.S. I will probably be looking to do research at my school as well but perhaps researching and volunteering looks better.

It might be good to check what research projects are available for you to help with at each place. Pick the research that interests you or engaging in it could be pure torture.

I'd say that most seem to have separate activities for research and clinical experience, but if you volunteer for clinical research where you're working one-on-one with patients, it counts for both. You'd still want to list some type of separate community service besides.
