Search for community dental clinics for underserved people. They usually take volunteers to help the assistants out, and if your there for awhile will let you assist. Larger cities tend to have them. There are also the Mission of Mercy events, 2 day dental clinics that provide free care, I believe they do them all over the US but they are usually once a year.
