Hi. Thanks for your vote. Feel free to add comments with a post, e.g. Voet compared to Voet/Voet, etc.

Thanks! 😛 😍 😛

Lehniger rules! I think it's a very readable textbook.

My prof also uses figures from Voet/Voet & Stryer.

It is very comprehensive but I think it is poorly written. There is no attempt to make the concepts easily understandable.

The illustrations are fantastic but the captions are hard to understand.

I know what the worst biochem text book is, Garrett and Grisham. My prof bashes it left and right, up and down. Some of the kinetics equations it teaches are just plain wrong.

But of course we have to use it anyway with supplements from the prof because every other prof in the department that we'll have from now on loves the book. That means 2 more classes for me that will use G&G.

in undergrad i had voet, and thought it was a fine book. my assigned text for med school is stryer and i've only cracked it to do the recommended questions my prof assigned. i get all my biochem from my notes + lippencott's. oh how i love thee, lippencotts.

I think Voet & Voet is probably the most comprehensive, but parts of it are dense and a bit poorly written. Stryer is great to read as an overview before reading Voet & Voet, but I don't think it covers most topics in enough depth to be used on its own.

worst: stryer (especially for med school, do not waste your money on this monstrosity)

best: the almighty lippincott's

I think the voting might simply reflect whatever book the person used when they took biochem. I would assume not many people have used all of them, and thus could indicate which is the best of all of them.

I haven't used them all.. but ill vote anyway 😛

the green 5th ed Berg/Stryer book is 8 million times better than that big, red, canvassy stryer. i've used both.
i think the 5th ed one was written mostly by berg, and it's a huge improvement. much easier to read, better figures, better organized. i recommend it.

i f i remember right [sold the book for $$$] the dna on the front of the book was backward [left-handed].

I am just finishing up my Biochem 1 and Biochem Lab 1 and we used Horton. I haven;t read very many of the others, but IMHO it is very nicely written. To me, it is interesting to read. ...I could read it for fun! ahhh!

For advanced biochem we are using Voet & Voet and from what everyone says it is "the Bible" of biochemitrsy. The best out there.

this is officially the dorkiest poll i have ever responded to.

damn i dont think theres anyway voet can catch up....

come on all your berkeley fools out there....vote voet!

and yes no egrets...i share your sentiments....

but its almost 2am in the morning... what else am i gonna do to relax? haha

I loved Stryer! Can't beat it

Blach!! Garett and Grisham! I hated that text. I actually ended up studying with Lippencott's Biochem Review. Much more to the point, but it's index isn't very thorough.

Ugh. This IS a nerdy poll! But I responded 'cause I am a Biochem nerd! I love Biochem!!!😍

*soleil*

Stryer was garbage - wretched writing. Good illustrations though.

I like Delvin et al

They use his book at a lot of med schools, eg U Chi

Edit: His name is Spelled Devlin ...oops

i f i remember right [sold the book for $$$] the dna on the front of the book was backward [left-handed].

I'm selling mine as soon as my classes don't use it anymore.

Hurray for biochem nerds!

A FANTASTIC book for a medical school biochemistry course, at least it was for the course I took in grad school.

Grisham actually teaches the Chemistry's department biochem 1 course at my school... so I had the wonderful pleasure of hating both the book and his class
