ok so a quick question.. how do the shells fill up..
s=2
p=6
d=8 or 10?
f=14?

and Q11 on destoryer puts d before sp why??? and when doing such questions only lone pairs count right? charges don't matter or do they??

a d subshell can hold 10 electrons. The order, a.k.a. the Aufbau principle, says the lowest energy subshell must be filled first, then the next lowest, following the sequence of increasing subshell energies. i.e. 1s > 2s> 2p > 3s > 3p > 4s 3d > 4p > 5s > 5d. Therefore, a 4s subshell will have lower energy than a 3d subshell and that is why it is filled first.

ohh i knew aufbau's princile the arrow diagram is how i do it.. but i totally forgot about it.. thanks.. and f=14 right??

yupp, and it doesnt only include lone pairs. the lone piars (or valence electrons) are what determines the chemical properties of an element.

You don't have to memorize the arrow diagram. To see which shell fills first do n+l = # and compare. For example,
5p = 5+1 = 6
whereas
3d = 3+2 = 5

So 3d would fill before 5p.

Note that:
s = 0
p = 1
d = 2
f = 3
