Wait listed at UConn?

Is that just a polite way for them to say no? And can anybody please explain the difference between being placed on the alternate list and placed on a waiting list?

I called up UCONN this friday cuz i got the same letter. I spoke with trish avolt, she said they typically place 25-50 students on the list with no order of preference. Dr. Thibedoa previously mentioned to me that they had given approx. 70 acceptances on dec. 1 and got 48 deposits for 40 spots. SO.....our chances to getting into UCONN are slim to none according to ms.avolt. Sorry!
