Waitlist City!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
1 waitlist for me. Not sure what to do. When do waitlists start moving? In May?

I'm feeling the waitlist too. I am on several of them, but I need to stay in NY, ideally, since my wife was accepted to a PhD here that she really wants

Waitlists should start moving soon (many revisits in the coming weeks to help people choose). If I remember correctly, it was around the end of March that the waitlists started moving the year that I applied. I would guess that top schools would probably be last to move, as students may still be torn between a few schools until revisiting all of them...

Do a significant number people usually get in off of waitlists? Or is that totally dependent on the school/year

I think they accept enough for the class, or maybe slightly more, then as people withdraw they start accepting people off waitlists. Whether these lists are ranked or not I think varies, but I cannot imagine a place not ranking the waitlist...I mean how would that work?

Remember you can hold 1 acceptance and I think as many waitlists as you want. Good luck to all.

Got off two waitlists (=> acceptances!) in the span of a week! There is hope for waitlisters! 😀

Thought i would give this post a "bump." Currently i am on NYU, Northwestern waitlists. I'm really anxious to see what happens after the May 2nd (my b'day!) multiple accept deadline.

Speaking of the multiple acceptance deadline, I am a bit confused. I have heard from some people that it is pushed to May 2nd this year because the 30th is a Saturday, but I have also heard people reference the deadline as April 30th still. Does anyone know which date is the official deadline this year?

Also, since it is a deadline, do we just have to inform them on the date of the deadline line (i.e. May 2 or April 30), or do we have to do it the day before the deadline?

I've heard from all the schools I'm waitlisted/accepted at that the deadline is 5pm EDT on May 2. (because April 30 is a weekend) If you're unsure it might be worthwhile to call the individual schools--while I don't think they'd care if you took until the 2nd it might be good to check just in case!

ahh im on the northwestern waitlist too!! They just had their second-look so hopefully there'll be some movement soon.

I figured there would be a lot of activity on is forum today ... Guess not🙁

anybody, anything?

I contacted Sinai, they said that they don't plan on utilizing much more of their waitlist, for those on it. May be good to contact Dr. Hurd of you haven't heard from them...

went ahead and contacted NYU. their class is also full and doesn't look like the waitlist will be utilized further.

Word on the street is that with the prospect of NIH budget cuts (HUGE deals for the schools), MD-PhD spots are preemptively getting cut down at quite a few places. Sucks to be an applicant this year.

Spots are getting cut for the entering class of fall 2012? Yikes.....think any programs will totally have their funding cut?

uh-oh.... What kind of cuts are we talking about?? Entire programs, or just a few seats?

Do you think it would be wise for this year's applicants to apply MD/PhD or MD instead of MD/PhD only?

Not trying to cause panic here, and I was talking about this years' entering class (hopefully not next, and if the budget cut doesn't happen it will probably be reversed). I just go to one of the big programs and we've taken away a couple spots from admissions this year and I was told it wasn't unique to us.

What most people don't realize when applying is that "MSTP" programs, despite the badge, only receive about ~30% of their funding via NIH. The rest comes out of the school's pocket in terms of the stipend and lost earning on having MD-only students in those spots (each year you are in med school effectively costs the institution ~$70k+). An NIH budget cut, while maybe "only" 5%, typically amounts to millions of lost dollars that has to come from somewhere.
