Hi guys,

So I have been accepted to one med school, but am on waitlist for my instate school. I want to stay instate due to lower tuition and staying close to family. That's why I have made no plans about moving to another state and setting up housing or anything logistically. It seems like a huge hassle as I wait to hopefully get off the waitlist.

I was wondering if any of you were in this dilemma, and had any advice on what I should do at this point. I don't want to go through all the hassle of moving out of state if I don't need to. But there is no guarantee....

Take the acceptance

No doubt I'll take the acceptance, but I want more insight on how to go about in the time that I wait to hear back from the other school. I'm assuming the best approach is to just pretend I won't get off the waitlist, and just finalize housing and everything out of state.

That's exactly what I'm doing. I'm picking an arbitrary date in late June where I'm going to start looking for housing and if I get in after that ill just move back I guess.

Don't really know what else we can do. Seems like a recipe for losing money when putting down housing deposits though.

If you are that worried about losing the deposit then pick a later day/month. If classes start August 20th, then move across the states beginning of August and find a place then.

There should be some movement around May 15th with people getting down to one acceptance, so that is probably your best shot. Not that it can't happen later (I know people pulled off waitlists in June, July, and even August).

As BABS said, if you are pretty set on trying your luck on the waitlist, you can wait pretty long before deciding to finally give up and move. It's risky in that you may not have the best options, but I'm sure you will find a place and it will work out ok. I don't think you need to be asking this question quite yet.

Its still a bit early for anything. Personally I'd wait until about June for commitment due to housing. I don't think signing a lease now would be that big of a difference anyway.
