OK..found out Im waitlisted at two of my favorite schools...have above avg gpa and avg mcat....got interviewed REALLY early and thought my interviews went great! Overall, my file seems pretty together....but I'm waitlisted! Of course (bein a premed) I am freaking out...are my chances totally shot? Ive got more interviews....but what's goin on? Any waitlist success stories?---btw schools were GW and MCV.....thanks all

A waitlist decision can mean different things depending on the school. Some schools waitlist almost everyone and take many people off it eventually. Others accept a fair amount of people initially and don't use their waitlist as much. I don't know what the policy is for these schools, but I'm sure they'd be happy to tell you if you want to call them.

when did you interview at GW, i'm wondering when my response will get here

Don't sweat it about MCV. They only accept the most stellar applicants on October 15th, and then send out the vast majority of acceptances after December 15th. Keep the faith!

Be patient (I know that's seriously hard) and KEEP sending them letters and emails. Find out who is a major player on the committee and email them now and then with updates. I was the waitlist queen last year, and I got off half the lists I was on. It is NOT a finished situation, keep showing interest, all schools use their waitlist to some extent, and you can get off of it.

Waitlist = close but no cigar (YET)

If one of your wait list schools is your top choice, definitely send them a letter of intent. But definitely only do this for a single school...a LOI is basically giving them your word that you will go there if accepted. It can help bump your application farther up on a ranked wait list. If the wait list is unranked, it might not help.

I second siempre595....keep in touch. It was an integral part of my getting off of the waitlist. I sent both letters and e-mails. I don't know how effective it will be this early on, but definitely show your interest to keep your file on the top. It is hard waiting, but you can do it. Good luck.

definitely true guys...I will be sending out LOI's soon...but I dont know what went wrong! I heard MCV took bout 85 this past week!! Thats a helluva lot..! I want to keep hearing from people about waitlists..I am sure that this will be a "hotter" topic during the coming months, but for those who are crazy anxious and worried that their entire "year off" is goin down the drain because of these waitlists, GIVE A SHOUT!!! best to all, and I mean it

I was recently waitlisted, and I'm definitely bummed. It would be nice to get an outright acceptance. I plan on writing a letter, but not for a few months at least.

I got waitlisted twice last year, didn't get in.

Definitely show interest with LOI and updates. Also have a game plan in case you have to reapply so that your application will show improvement.

Most important is to not put all your hopes onto the waitlist.

shaken,

from what the admissions lady at MCV told me, they would take between 20-30 on Oct 15....so i don't think the 80 you heard about is true.

I agree with what has been written about MCV. They "waitlist" most people and take only steller applicants 10-15. There will be a bunch of people accepted around 12-15 and again in feb.

The actual waitlist will begin in the spring. There are 2 waitlists -out of state and instate. When an out of stater gives up their seat after 5-15 another out of stater will be taken off the waitlist, and the same holds true for the instate list (which moves MUCH SLOWER than the out of state list)

I know all this to be 100% fact. Trust me when I say I KNOW how MCV works.

I was waitlisted at THREE schools last year.

Anyway being waitlisted means- "They want you, but not right now and not that badly".

same boat - "on hold" post interview at UF and USF - #1 and #2. average gpa, above average mcat, great lors & ecs. is this the same as being waitlisted?

I think the hold catergory is different at different schools. I was placed on hold at my number one and they revaluate it again each month. They also said if there is no change on the hold list by April (APRIL!!!!!) then we become the alternate list...AKA waitlisted. UGH.

lets look at the bright side you were not out-right rejected... now you have to get yourself accepted!

I'd send periodic updates with volunteer/research accomplishments and update with you fall semester grades in Dec. and ofcourse reiterate your commitment to your school.

I would do a search but I think someone was waitlisted at 6 schools last year and she got in to a few of them, username = moskeeto maybe? Try a search...

You should feel confident that your application is worthy of multiple interviews, early in the game-- I imagine several more and perhaps a welcome acceptance as a xmas gift ---> now that's a stocking stuffer 🙂
