hey guys, i just got an interview at wake forest and im deciding on whether to go or not. i'm in at drexel and temple, on the alternate list at tulane, and should hear from jefferson and tufts soon. im very optimistic for jeff and tufts. is wake worth the trip all the way down to nc from boston? i havent heard much about the school at all but my friend who is there likes it aside from the initial adaptation to suburban life.

thanks

Wake is a good school. You get a free top of the line ibm thinkpad. Lectures are online. The hospital is always being remodeled. The biggest question would be whether you want to live in Winston-Salem which is pretty darn slow and boring IMO. It certainly isn't Boston. The education you receive would be good. I am also concerned about the patient population(essentially white or black). I want to go back to cali to settle down and I would like to have experience with a more diverse group of ethnicities. Won't find that at Wake. I actually got there on a Sunday and walked around the medical center; it was dead. No staff walking around, no patients walking around; nothing. One would think that a tertiary care hospital of that size would seem a lot busier even though it was a Sunday.

Its weird...after visiting all these med schools the biggest issue in my mind seems to be location, location, location(hehe kinda like real estate). Most schools I have been to have some sort of PBL/lecture style of teaching and they usually try to get you clinical experience your first year. I honestly believe I'll get a good education at most schools(at least where i have interviewed). For me one of the biggest positives/negatives is location. Of course I never say that during interviews....because at that moment in time so and so school is in a location that somehow knocks the socks off of me. 😀

Speaking of Wake Forest interviews, they're going into April....

(and if you have one of those late interviews, I released my March 14th date a little while ago if you'd like to look into moving up)

do a search for "Wake Forest" and "Adcadet" and you'll see at least a few places where I highlight a lot of the things I love about Wake. But in the end, Winston-Salem was just not right for me - my research is in MN, as is my family and my fiance's family.

Tufts02,

I think I interviewed the same day you did at Drexel, was it back in November? I remember someone there talking about Tufts, etc. and how they were from Pennsylvania and loved Boston.

My recommendation for you is to drop the Wake interview, and send it my way. I love the slow southern life (4 years in Durham at Duke) and everyone's right, Winston-Salem is the same way.

Let me know if you want any more info so that when you call and cancel you can tell them that I desperately want an interview at Wake! (Even though we (ie Duke) played the most pathetic bball game I've ever seen against them last night). Good luck to you!

thats not ass sucking...u want ass sucking see "pauley pavilion." A place whose only sellout this season happened when Lebron James came over for a tournament. How sad is that?

OK, you got me there..i conceed, UCLA blows more ass than Duke this year....

LOL, I guess one good reason to check out Wake is that our basketball team is doing pretty well this year!!! The win against Duke made my night and pissed off the ex-Dukies in the class. But I have to admit that was the worst referee'd game I've ever seen in my life. It was a miracle any players were left for the 2nd OT.

A couple of points to clear up. Winston-Salem has a very large hispanic population so it's not just white and black. Granted you will see a wider diversity of patients in a large city, but whites, blacks, and hispanics are a big part of the hospital community. So we might not get as much experience working with translators but we get our fair share. And if you think the hospital is dead on Sundays, go up a couple of floors. The main lobby area does seem a bit dead, but check out the patient areas. As of last night there were 2 open beds in the Children's hospital and less than 10 in the whole joint. The ED was backlogged big time. so don't worry, you'll see patients.

In my opinion, wake is an outstanding institution which actually feels like a medical school, and not a hospital which happens to have some students. That's a big difference I see when talking to some of my other friends in different schools. That being said, if you have your heart set on experiencing the big city, then we probably aren't right for you and you should think about giving up your interview spot for someone else who might want to take it. Of course, I think the big city might be overrated since I'm paying $800 monthly on a mortage for a 3 bedroom house that we bought...dog, lawn, picket fence, all that. I've paid that much with a roomate for a 2 bedroom apt. in other places. But I'm an old guy so I don't have some of the same needs.......
