Does Wake Forest have it's incoming students get complete physicals before they matriculate or just immunizations?

anyone anyone?
 
i believe that all medical schools require you to get titer tests to check for certain things such as rubeola, rubella, varicella, hepB....

vaccination records do not substitute for titers.....

the only thing that the med schools accept in your vaccination records is if you got vaccinated for the mumps.

and a TB test of course.

i am assuming all these things apply to wake forest as well.
it would be odd to think wake forest would not require this to ensure that their students are not in danger of anything.
 
Thanks, I realize that all schools require immunizations (i.e. Titers etc). But what about physical exams?
 
Hey,

Wake does indeed make sure that you have a complete physical before orientation starts. You also need to be up on your immunizations. They'll screen you during orientation week for your Varicella titer and do a TB-skin test also. Let me know if you have any other questions about Wake!
 
Just as a note, I think I am going to be buying a house there close to the hospital and will be looking for a roommate or two. If anyone is interested hit me up.

How well do you think the curriculum prepared students for the boards?

I am 90% sure I am going to Wake. I am debating between Wake Forest and Boston U. I think I can have a higher quality of life in Winston-Salem.

The match list this year for Wake was pretty good I think. There were a lot of matches in Anesthesiology, Emergency Med, Orthopedics & Radiology among others, and a lot of people matched at schools like UCSD, UCSF, Duke & Mayo. That said, a lot of people also matched here at Wake. I can't tell you how many got their top 3 choices, but I think for the most part everybody was happy.

It's also really funny that you asked me about the curriculum & the boards. I actually took my Step 1 today! I think overall it was good. We were weak in Infectious Diseases and the school implemented an extra 2 weeks on that topic which really helped. The only other weakness in the curriculum that I can pinpoint is Pharmacology, but I think they've been working to address that.

For what it's worth, I have been very happy at Wake. Yes, Winston is a little slow, but Greensboro & Charlotte are nearby, and usually classmates will organize a lot of social activities. Plus, you'll get to witness firsthand the madness that is ACC basketball. Housing here is cheap, but you need a car to get around.

A question for current students, what thinkpad model do they give you, A, R, T, or X? It says it in the lower right hand corner of the screen frame (ie. it will say t40 or r31).

do you guys know when wake forest waitlist movement occurs. I have been waitlisted since february. I wrote them a letter of interest (not intent, cuz they're my second choice), still haven't heard back. I just got approved for graduating with highest honors in biochem, you think if I tell my research advisor to write them a letter saying this it'll help me? A good news from wake would take a load off my back.

I called them. NO waitlist movement until May 15 (there might be a few exceptions). There are currently 250 people on the waitlist and they expect to accept about 50 more off of it. It isn't too promising if you don't know where you are on the waitlist. The list is ranked but they won't tell you the rank and when moving people off the list they don't have to follow the rank.

The class of 2006 got the R31 model. As for the waitlist movement, all I can say is to have patience and to periodically write them letters of interest. I can say personally that when I got the call from them they asked me if I was still interested in attending because they hadn't heard from me in a few months. So clearly, they do keep tabs on your correspondence. As for only taking 50 people off the waitlist, I think those numbers are really low. Generally speaking, Wake tends to eventually accept about 50% of the waitlist, so if you got an interview from them, you're in pretty good shape.
 
I am going to apply to wake forest for 2005 admission, how did you guys/girls think that increased your chances at wake. I just want to get some pointers.
 
I have a question about waitlist in general. Do schools only accept the same number of people as their class size at first and waitlist a lot and then eventually start accepting waitlisted ones as the acceptees start withdrawing or do they accept more than their class size to start with, knowing that some of them are going to withdraw anyways and waitlist a few ones? Looking at wake forest's number for example, last year they accepted 296 applicants to fill a class of 108. That means a lot of candidates withdrew; my question is did they initially accept only 108 and waitlisted many to eventually give acceptances to 296 or do they accept significantly more than 108 intially and then accept a few from waitlist?

I know that Wake does in fact accept 108 students initially, and as those students accept or withdraw, they then begin to draw from the waiting list.
 
That means they eventually accept 296-108=188 people off waitlist. Right?

Class of 2007 Thinkpad model is R40
Currently I'm not sure the exact model for 2008 but it most likely will be an R series
 
I want to go to Wake Forest! But I'm on the waitlist. I sure hope they take more than 50 people off of it.

I think IBM thinkpads are the best laptops going and I know many companies use them. This is probably because of their solid construction. The R series is a lower end model, but beggers can't be choosers (the t series is ideal, small and powerful, the x series is very small yet doesn't have an attached CD drive). If I were to buy a laptop myself I would buy the Thinkpad (t series), despite IBM's higher price. I like them much better than Dells, which are too flimsy for me.
 
Hey, for those of you a little concerned about the waitlist.

I'm in the class of 2007, and most of my class came off of the waitlist. Last year the waitlist really started moving on May 23 (several of my classmates including me found out on that day). The last person accepted into my class found out 4 days before orientation.

On the computer note, I don't know what they've got planned for next years class, but our computers are pretty nice. There was a glitch with the system boards, but our academic computing department is great.

I feel like an actor on the late show putting in a plug for an upcoming movie, but I figured I'd give it a shot anyway. I hope no one minds.

I just bought a house in Ardmore, about a 7 minute walk from the hospital. Right now it has 4 Bedrooms and 1.5 baths, but I am going to change that this summer to a 3 BR 2.5 baths. So, I am looking for two roommates. If anyone is interested PM me and I can give you pictures and such.
 
Do most folks live within walking distance of the hospital? The apartments I'm looking at are a good 5-10 minute drive away. (Not that thats terribly far) I'd prefer to live within walking distance, but my boyfriend doesn't want to live in an apartment thats in someone's backyard or is part of someone's house. And that seems to constitute most of the options off of the housing website.

The model for the class of 2008 will be the IBM Thinkpad T41 model.
That's a change from the usual R models and I think it's a bit lighter as well. Our R41 are great. No complaints from me. A few classmates have had some problems but when you have 100+ laptops there are bound to be a few glitches.
As JillianRae mentioned, the Academic computing department is superb.
Your thinkpad is vital as the lectures are on powerpoint sometimes with occasional pdfs or word docs. You will also take your exams on them.

As an update, the laptop that the class of 2008 will receive at orentation is a:

IBM ThinkPad t41 Notebook
Intel Pentium M 1.6GHz Centrino
512 MB RAM
40GB HDD
CDRW/DVD combo
Internal 802.11g
Windows XP Professional
and more.

I am quite impressed they are "giving" us a T series, these are very nice laptops that are easy to carry around.

The wireless should be 802.11a/b/g model because the lecture halls and the rest of the campus/hospital will have wireless a-band. So all members of 2008 will have this and no need to depend on the ethernet cable.

Orientation week starts July 26th in Babcock Auditorium
It will be a week filled with activities and parties, enjoy it, grab the free food etc and relax. Classes start Aug 2nd; Phase 1A lecs are already up too :laugh:

Have fun this summer! A few of the second years will be around to guide you through the many activites and places you need to be. We don't start until august 23rd.

I can't wait!

I just opened escrow on a house near Clemmons/w-s. Maybe 10-15 min from school. It is amazing what kind of houses you can get there for so cheap.

I don't know if it's moving, but I'm still on it and in the letter they sent me in February they say that about 30-50 % of the class is pulled from it.
 
Yep, it's moving. Just got an acceptance last week and took it as it is my first choice school.
 
Congrats to all those of you who have been accepted to Wake. It's a great school. I know that the class of 2007 looks forward to meeting all of you in July or August (depending on when we decide to come back). We're hard at work planning for your orientation week and a few other fun activities.
