Have any of you gotten this email from Wake forest? It stated just based on my MCAT they would like me to apply for this program.... The program is for URM's and while I come from an economically disadvantaged background, I am a white male. I didn't even apply to any MD schools or use AMCAS.

Dear Prospective Applicant:
The Wake Forest University School of Medicine is pleased to learn of your interest in a medical career.

Acknowledging the need for continual institutional growth in the recruitment and training of students not traditionally represented in medicine, our institution is committed to increasing the representation of students who are underrepresented in medical education.

Based solely on your MCAT scores, we invite you to apply to our Post Baccalaureate Premedical Program. The program is designed to facilitate the entrance of minority and disadvantaged students into medical school. Eligibility requirements are as follows: a bachelor's degree from an accredited U.S. school, an undergraduate science GPA of 2.7 or better and a total MCAT score of 21 or above (preferably 7’s in all areas) in Verbal Reasoning, Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences and "N" or higher in the Writing Sample.

The program begins in August and continues through the fall and spring semesters. The curriculum includes graduate level science courses, writing and test taking skills. Students are responsible for their own living expenses, and a $15,000 program fee.

Students who successfully complete requirements of the program and the interview process are offered admission to Wake Forest University School of Medicine as first year medical students.

I just got a similar email today, but instead of the post bacc program it's for the school of medicine.

Maybe I'll apply since I have the fee waiver, but I really don't get how they are encouraging me to apply based on my mcat of 27. 😕

Yeah, I think these are just general automatic emails sent out to people who meet a minimum score. I wouldn't put too much emphasis on these emails.

Oh, I don't, I just think it's funny considering it doesn't apply at all to me whatsoever.

FWIW, I'm from the same kind of background as you (lower income white), applied for the program and got an interview. I didn't get in, but, I just thought I'd let you know that this program is meant for people like us as well. There was an article in NEJM four or so years ago about how the vast majority of physicians, something like 80% (disclaimer - I don't recall the statistics exactly), come from families in the upper 20% of income levels, which is why I think there are programs like this, and Georgetown GEMS, Ohio State MedPATH, and Drexel DPMS...I don't think there are any programs like these at DO schools, which is really very unfortunate, AACOMAS is also much more restrictive with fee waivers, both in terms of the number of waivers they give out and the income cutoffs for the waivers, which I also think is unfortunate. In any event, if you got the fee waiver from AMCAS, Wake will let you use that for this program as well. It's definitely an impressive school with excellent facilities. I know this is the pre-DO forum, but maybe you'll get into Wake and not any of the DO schools, in which case you're at least on the path to where you want to be.
