I really liked both programs, and I think these are two of the best programs in the South. I'm just curious about what other people think of these two places and how they think they compare. I'm really torn between these two as I try to work through my rank list.

UAB >>> Wake.

Can I ask your reasoning for that Coastie. I am also torn between these two programs. They seem very similar. UAB has the awesome moonlighting but kindda weak peds. Wake seems to be solid all around and has a 4 year option but not in the most exciting city for us single folks.

UAB >>> Wake.

I'd like to hear your reasoning for that as well... I interviewed at both places and think they both looked strong. I ultimately chose WF and could not have been happier there. I don't feel that any one area was weak and most were very strong. Will post more if anyone is interested. (Again don't get me wrong UAB seemed like a good program also).

Both are equally strong programs with great reputations. I would go with which city you would most enjoy living in. Either way, you can't go wrong with these two programs.

Birmingham is much better on the single scene than Winston-Salem.

It's too late now to get into alot of detail, but I'd definitely say UAB edges out Wake on the program front. Peds at UAB is getting stronger each year, especially with some recent political changes, I'm told.

Both are great, but UAB takes the solid gold in my book. PM me for more info.

I'm definitely interested to hear anything more you may have to add. Particularly, what was the deciding factor for you in choosing WF over UAB?

Birmingham>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>winston-salem; just my 2 cents tho....both good programs but where will you be happy living for 4 years? Pretty much what my decision would come down to.....

bump (rather than create a new thread).

these programs seem similar in clinical experience, emphasis on teaching, moonlighting, work/life balance, etc.

so hard to differentiate the two...

does it truly come down to Birmingham vs Winston-Salem?

WF seems to have a strong presence on SDN; any UAB residents out there willing to talk about their program?

I'll bite. Ranked both programs highly. All personal opinion but UAB seemed to have a more complete clinical experience. Very stable leadership. Areas where UAB excelled compared to wake: trauma and transplant. Debatable whether these experiences make you a better physician. Comparable OB and maybe CV off the top of my head. Wake gets the edge in pain. UAB has the best moonlighting opportunities of any program I visited, not even close. And wake I believe had didactics at 3, so although you're out of the or you're still on the hook. Again, both great programs
