I will be the first medical school applicant in my family, so I really need some help to gauge which schools I should apply to to have the best chance for an acceptance this cycle. Also, please let me know if anyone wouldn't mind reviewing my activities descriptions.

  1. 4.0 GPA
  2. Biology Major; Minors in Medical Humanities and Chemistry
  3. 506's on my practices. Ill receive my score next week.
  4. Born and raised in Illinois
  5. South Asian
  6. Benedictine University - a smaller private Catholic university
  7. Clinical experience (volunteer and non-volunteer)
    1. Medical assistant - Family medicine: (1200 Hrs - 1700 anticipated)
    2. Day-Surgery and Pathology Department Volunteer (100 Hrs )
  8. Research experience and productivity
    1. Biological and Ostomy Care Research in collaboration with Hollister Inc. (536 Hrs - 550 anticipated)
      1. Two abstract publications and 5 poster sessions (2 of those for nationally accredited orgs.)
    2. BPA and Neuroendocrinology research funded by the NIH. (800 Hrs)
      1. One manuscript in prep and 2 poster sessions.
  9. Shadowing experience and specialties represented
    1. Shadowed Family med (high-school), Nephrology, Pathology, and Anesthesiology. Expected emergency med, and transplant nephrology. (100 Hrs - 50 anticipated).
  10. Non-clinical volunteering
    1. Nursing Home Memory Care Unit. (120 Hrs)
    2. Week long Service trip building homes with the Habitat for Humanity. (65 Hrs)
    3. Mosque youth program (204 Hrs)
    4. Meal Distribution in Chicago with ChiCare (300 Hrs - 80 anticipated)
  11. Other extracurricular activities (including athletics, military service, gap year activities, leadership, teaching, etc)
    1. Leadership - Co-Founder and President for a non-profit at my Uni. (400 Hrs - 180 anticipated)
    2. Leadership w/ Local Volunteering - Volunteer Coordinator for UNICEF at my Uni. (300 Hrs - 80 anticipated)
    3. Hobby - Woodworking and Creative Projects (500 Hrs - 200 anticipated)
    4. EC - Ice Hockey and Skating w/ Coaching: High-School to Present (Over 4-5k hrs with ~400 being in UG. Not sure how to write the Hrs for this one).
    5. Restaurant Busser and Food Runner: High-School to Present. (1300 Hrs in HS - 448 UG - 250 anticipated)
  12. Relevant honors or awards
    1. University Honors student with scholarship (20 selected from class of 1000)
    2. Tri-Beta biological honors society
    3. Summer Research Award from the Wound Healing Society
  13. Anything else not listed you think might be important
    1. I would not consider myself from a vulnerable population or lower-household income.
I have a relatively wide-net list of experiences here and most are reflective in the way I view my community and place in it- and of course in medicine. If you have any recommendations such as not including some of these please let me know.

A lot will depend on your MCAT, especially where you fall on either side of 510 if your practices are accurate.

I need more details on your non-clinical volunteering. This makes a difference if you are a good candidate for Rush/Loyola/Jesuit schools or not.

I don't get your public school list that includes West Virginia (OOS), Albany, UMKC, or the Texas schools like Houston, Baylor, or UNT (also OOS). Sure if you were born and raised in Illinois, your in-state options are available but your score will matter. Being involved with mosque-related service should have you look up AMMSA chapters at the schools on your list and could put many Michigan schools in play, including Western Michigan, Oakland, and Wayne State (included). Not sure about Campbell and moving out to NC.
