School list: - need help
I am interested in specializing OMS and would prefer to go to a P/F institution with good clinical exposure, research opportunities, integrated med school curriculum if possible. (I don't need a lecture on specializing, I know what I'm getting into and understand there is no guarantee etc...)

Harvard
Columbia
UPenn
UCSF
UCLA
USC
Michigan
Uconn
UNC
take off USC

the other 9 schools are in the top 10-12 most difficult to get into d schools in the country
though your stats will help a lot, there's no telling which and how many interviews you will get

how come you haven't participated in any events at the UC dental schools?

To be honest I didn’t even know there were events you could attend. I’m not in the LA or SF area so they would be pretty out of the way to visit.
ok
point taken
but those schools should be your TOP priority, so you should have looked into it and made it happen by now
since you are applying next cycle, you have time to correct that...

how come uop is not on your list?

I heard UOP is hard for specializing because you would have to study for the CBSE during their 3 year accelerated program which is already very difficult.
someone with your stats would not have an issue with that, IMO

how come you haven't shadowed/assisted at an OMFS office?
how do you know you want to do OS?

Virtual fairs and events are still common. Are you on any admissions email lists? Have you connected with ASDA or SNDA chapter officers?

Your metrics give you a chance to call your shot, but as pointed out, you put down the most difficult dental schools in the country who will also have their share of strong applicants. That's at least why I was wondering why not UoP or Western if you intend to stay in California to practice.

Common OOS schools for California applicants include the other Western regional schools like Arizona, UNLV, Colorado, Utah, Roseman. You probably have the stats to be the unique OOS applicant that UW wants. Granted, you seem to be very specific with wanting a P/F curriculum, so you don't have to go with convention if you have that information considered.

Where did your father go to dental school or any residency programs in the US? I'm guessing his peers may also share opinions about your list.

Ideally, your list should not be over 15. Most admissions processes tend to pick rather regionally, though as a California applicant, pay close attention to your costs of attendance. California is an exporter, so you should consider Midwestern and East Coast schools... but again, your metrics give you a chance to call your shot if you have the right mission fit.

My father is OS. I’ve shadowed him a lot and have been passionate about it my whole life. Can’t really put that as shadowing hours on an application tho. Anyways I know what I’m getting into and it’s 100% my own decision and passion. I am also content with general dentistry but I want to put myself in a good position to make that choice when I get more experience.
ok, cool

you seem to have a handle on things, but i would recommend a school other than USC as a safety...

I am not on any email lists. How impactful is it to attend these virtual meetings?

My father attended USC and did residency in Texas. My brother is at UCSF dental right now.

What would you say my chances are at the schools I listed?
AHA!!! That explains why you're including USC. :) Where in Texas did your dad do residency (also presuming in OS)?

I think you can call your shot at many schools, and with your family having success, that is a plus factor. (I'm going to assume your brother is killing it at UCSF.) :) Is there a specific concern you have?

Just make sure you submit your application ON TIME... as in within the first month, not necessarily on day 1. Volunteer at the next CDA regional or state meeting, maybe with your brother and dad bringing you. :)

ok, it's ok if you want to leave usc if your father went there
is your brother doing well at ucsf?

your chances are great at any school in the country
it's just that your list contains only the top schools, so it's hard to say how many interviews you may get...

most schools keep records of every contact you have with them
showing interest/learning about the program has zero downside, and only upside...

Thank you for the kind words. My brother is doing very good at UCSF. My dad did residency in Houston.

Why does USC get a lot of hate other than the fact that it’s expensive? Every thread I see has comments saying not to apply to schools like USC and NYU.

Is there anything you recommend I do to maximize my chances at the schools I listed before I apply?
no one is going to say anything bad about USC now that you have told us your dad went there... :)

regional publics are good safety schools...
Agreeing, so read what I suggested.

All your California options (5-6)
USC, UCLA, Western, Pacific, UCSF, LLU if the spirit moves you [pun not really intentional but they want that spiritual letter]
P.S. I don't know if/how the new California state law "prohibiting" legacy admissions will apply to you, but your metrics will speak for itself.

Regional options (pick 2-3)
Arizona, UNLV, Colorado, Utah, Roseman

Go for the Ivys
Harvard, Penn, Columbia

Publics as desired
UNC, Michigan, Ohio State, UConn (because their Ivy-like curriculum), UWashington, Oregon, anywhere else that gives you in-state after 1 year.

And see if you want to go for HPSP and check out access to their OMS programs, many of whom are in Texas.

you know how much i hate to disagree with you, mr.s, but arizona schools, western, LLU, and roseman are not good options in my opinion...

Probably. And OP's family probably agree with you too. :) :) Just saying what I would start as my list and pare down from that.

With a pilot's license and scuba training... why not try Air Force HPSP, right?

I’m not really familiar with HPSP, what does it entail? With the current state of the world I’m not trying to get shipped to Ukraine or Gaza after I finish dental school…
It's your preference, but just about every successful OMS I have crossed paths with (albeit in a biased sample) had military rank from their time in HPSP. Go to the HPSP forum here.
