Hello! I graduated May 2024 and am currently in my gap year. I am planning on applying in the 2025/2026 cycle and am looking for some guidance on my school list. In my gap year I have worked as a Medical Assistant, volunteered at St Vincent de Paul, and am currently getting placed to volunteer with Free Arts for Abused Children of Arizona. Please share any feedback you may have! Thank you!

  1. cGPA: 3.73 sGPA: 3.58
  2. MCAT: First attempt: 498: C/P 124 CARS 124 B/BCM 125 P/S 125 Second : 501: C/P 127 CARS 124 B/BCM 125 P/S 125 Third : 503: C/P 124 CARS 126 B/BCM 127 P/S 126
  3. State of residency: Arizona
  4. Ethnicity/race: Indian
  5. Undergrad: Saint Louis University
  6. Clinical experience: 1000+ hours working as a medical assistant in a primary care clinic, 50 hours working as a medical assistant in dermatology, 25 hours volunteering at an emergency department, another 25 in a medical unit
  7. Research experience: One-year researching prescription drug abuse
  8. Shadowing experience: 200 hours in a pediatric clinic, 100 hours in an internal medicine clinic and around 40 in a cardiovascular clinic
  9. Non-clinical volunteering: 150+ hours volunteering at St Vincent De Paul a homeless shelter(still volunteering 8 hours a week), 60 hours volunteering at a non-profit organization that is a shelter for teen moms, around 40 with the March of Dimes as a youth leader, and getting placed to volunteer at Free Arts for Abused Children of Arizona
  10. Other extracurricular activities: I was the recruitment chair of my sorority and the director of choreography on the executive board for my school's hip hop team during undergrad.
  11. Work: Worked as a general chemistry lab prep for two years during my undergrad, worked at a camp that teaches kids how to code over the summer, and am currently working full time as a face to face medical assistant at a primary care clinic
  12. Looking to apply to both DO and some MD(mostly in state). University of AZ - phoenix and tucson, Midwestern - AZ and IL, AT Still - AZ and MO, KCU, Creighton - AZ, RVU, Mercer, DMU, WVSOM
  13. Relevant honors or awards: Deans lists all four years of undergrad.

IMO- Definitely seems like you have a great resume for many DO. For MD, I’d just make sure you’re looking at schools that don’t have mcat benchmarks. Ones focused on EC’s will eat up your experiences as long as you can write meaningful, unique essays! Many people have been MA’s. But what may have been a unique experience you had as an MA and why did that prepare you for med school?

You have a solid profile for DO and perhaps your in-state Arizona options. I'm not sure why you list Mercer or WVSOM as their environments are less similar to what you have lived in (from what you have given us). I would like to hear why medicine is your purpose given your activities.

Mercer does not admit non residents. You are competitive for most DO schools and I suggest these:
AZCOM
TUNCOM
UIWSOM
KCU-COM
ATSU-KCOM
DMU-COM
CCOM
MU-COM
CUSOM
WVSOM
ACOM
PCOM
NYITCOM
Touro-NY
For MD schools I suggest these:
Arizona (Tucson and Phoenix)
Arizona State (when it opens)
Alice Walton
Belmont
TCU
Creighton
Roseman (when it opens)
Methodist (when it opens)
Oakland Beaumont
Ponce ((St. Louis)

Thank you for your feedback! I did not realize that Mercer and WVSOM only took in-state residents so thank you for that information. In terms of “why medicine”, I am really interested in primary care because I enjoy the process of following through with a patients care and creating meaningful relationships with them. Most of my ECs are primary care and community service which has furthered my interest to work with underserved populations through healthcare.
