Hey guys!
I just got my MCAT score back today and am getting ready to apply this cycle so I was hoping I could get some insight into my chances as well as help with my school list.
I'm 25 so a bit of a non-trad (and unfortunately still recovering from the actions of my 18/19 year old self haha). Long story short, I had multiple transfers and started out as an idiot, but finished strong the last 3 years (3.7 GPA in 90 credit hours, mainly upper-level sciences for biochem major).
IL resident
Major: Biochemistry
sGPA/cGPA: 3.2 (3.3 sGPA for AACOMAS)
School 1: 2011 to 12: 2.0
School 2 (CC): 2012 to 2013: 3.8
School 3: Fall 2013: 3.0
School 4: 2014/2015 - 3.75, 15/16 - 3.6, 16/17- 3.95
MCAT: 514
ECs
- worked 2 part-time jobs throughout school, one on campus, and another as a tutor at a learning center (~1000 hours)
- Clinical volunteering: 200 hours, non-clinical: 100 hours
- Certified EMT (but haven't used it), started scribe job in ER following MCAT in April so I will be doing that
- Shadowing: 50 hours
- 2 club officer positions
- Research: In same lab for 3 years and completed thesis for the honors program, received 2 grants and department research award, presented posters at two international conferences as well as an oral presentation on campus, one publication
Here's my potential school list:
DO
CCOM
RVUCOM
DMU
NSU
PCOM
KCU
KCOM
MUCOM
MD
U of I
SIU
Rosalind Franklin
Rush
Loyola
Western Michigan, Wayne State and OUWB (have ties to MI)
Creighton
MCW
NYMC
Albany
Wake Forest
Tulane
Quinnipiac
Seton Hall
NSU
That's pretty much a summary of everything. I guess my main questions would be:
1. Is my MCAT score/upward trend enough for schools to look past my academic history, and if so, what schools should I target?
2. I'm aware that my volunteering/clinical experience isn't that impressive, especially for some of the MD schools that I might be able to target like Rush, Loyola, or Creighton. Would holding off until next cycle so I can continue my scribe job and get more non-clinical volunteering hours be worth it?
3.Also, I unfortunately have an IA at the first school I went to 7 years ago (drinking in dorms before school started, like I said..18 yo me was the worst haha). I have been told that this shouldn't do too much to affect my chances, but is that still true even with a 3.2 GPA?
Thanks!
