Hi everyone, first time posting here but I will do my best to follow WedgeDawg's formatting. Any help/input would be greatly appreciated, and I am planning to apply this cycle during my gap year.

1. GPA
  • 3.72 cGPA, 3.65 sGPA in my last semester as a senior (switched from BME to Neurobio in the middle of junior yr, upward trend with 4.0 last two semesters [40 s.h.])
2. MCAT w/ Breakdown
  • 520 (129/131/131/129)
3. State of Residency
  • IA Resident
4. Ethnicity/Race
  • White/Asian
5. Undergraduate Institution
  • Large Public University
6. Clinical Experience
  • ~250 hrs volunteering in the local university hospital which I have done since senior year of high school. Various tasks in various departments, but essentially all was patient interaction. Will be continuing once possible throughout my gap year
  • 60 hrs editing procedure videos that were used to teach residents/show to patients & families
  • 20 hrs volunteering with free medical clinic (would've been ~double, but COVID)
  • 20 hrs as first aid for campus events (wicked at slinging out bandaids btw)
7. Research experience and productivity
  • ~100 hrs working with doctor pulling information from patient charts for study. No pubs/posters
  • ~500 hrs working with Ph.D. w/ 2x 1st author posters that were presented by PI at int'l conference. Currently working on a 1st author manuscript to be submitted to low-impact journal
8. Shadowing experience and specialties represented
  • 24 hrs - General Surgery
  • 12 hrs - Emergency Med
  • 8 hrs. - Family Med
  • 4 hrs. - Ophthalmology
  • 4 hrs. - Oncology
  • 4 hrs. - Endocrinology
9. Non-clinical volunteering
  • ~180 hrs at local food bank where I now do mini-social work with clients in a one-on-one setting. Will also be continuing throughout gap year
  • 50 hrs as part of event fundraising for pediatric hospital
10. Other extracurricular activities (including athletics, military service, gap year activities, leadership, teaching, etc)
  • Leadership
    • ~700 hrs as Volunteer Director (~200 hrs/1 semester) -> President (~500 hrs/1 yr) of the university's food bank for students, faculty & staff. During this time we opened a second location and were working on bringing more SNAP resources onto campus. Led team meetings, applied for funding, presented in front of student congress, and had the chance to meet with the president of the university to discuss campus issues which was pretty cool
    • ~150 hrs as Treasurer of tech org on campus
  • Teaching
    • ~100hrs of private tutoring for anything and everything from 2nd grade math to ACT prep
11. Relevant honors or awards
  • Dean's List a few times and President's List once if that matters
  • Some scholarships while an engineering student, but they were pretty much gimmes so I won't bother
12. Anything else not listed you think might be important
  • Have my EMT-B which I'm planning to use during my gap year as part of a volunteer 911 service, as well as to secure a position as a CNA. However, at this time these activities aren't set in stone.

Thanks for taking the time out of your day to take a look at my post, I appreciate it.

You should be in a good position with in-state options like Iowa. Have you been keeping connected with admissions staff and students at all the Iowa schools? Hobbies, or any activities you do that don't focus on health care or science?
Thank you for taking the time out of your Friday afternoon to help me out. I had a meeting with a member of the Carver admissions office when I was a junior, but I was certainly not (and still am not) a stand out applicant as I had a 3.6 cGPA and a 3.4 sGPA with no MCAT score. I have a number of friends who are currently students at Carver and I have been keeping in touch with them over the years.

I really enjoy weightlifting and running, but these are hobbies that are pretty universal. My non-clinical volunteering at the food bank has become a bit of a hobby as I quite like the team and clientele I work with. I am also dipping my toes into watchmaking, but that doesn't go much beyond tearing down and reassembling cheap mechanical movements.

Throw a couple moonshots on there like Harvard, Yale, or Stanford; you’ve got a puncher’s chance there. Other than that list looks good. Good luck.

Thank you for your help. I understand that NYU is probably a pipe dream with my stats, but I tried to select schools using lists you had suggested to others with similar stats to mine. With my app do you think that Downstate, Stony Brook and Temple would not be good fits?

I'm willing to shoot for the moon if you think it's worth it. Thank you for your help!

The SUNYs are that friendly to OOS. They favor the home team. Temple is likely to resource protect you out.
You could try NYU-LI.

Your sGPA is towards the 10th %iles of the NYU class schools. They have their pickings of the 3.9ers, and they don't need to reward reinvention. You could try Columbia and Dartmouth instead.

I understand and will revise my list. Thank you for your guidance!
