Hi everyone! First-time poster here I'd really appreciate some advice.

I'm wondering if I'm doing enough to be a strong medical school applicant. Here's a summary of my experiences so far:

  • Research Internship: Over 230 hours completed
  • Independent Study: Two semesters, including a poster presentation
  • Clinical Experience:
    • 200 hours as a medical assistant
    • Volunteer EMT with nearly 150 hours
  • Shadowing: Over 120 hours across four physicians
  • Volunteering:
    • 400 hours at a hospital
    • 100 hours at a hospice care center
  • Leadership: Active leadership role at my church with around 180 hours
  • Academics:
    • NY resident, currently completing undergrad in North Carolina
    • Cumulative GPA: 3.7
    • Science GPA: 3.85
    • MCAT: 515
  • LORS. prehealth, 2 physicians I shadowed, independent study instructor

It seems that you're lacking nonclinical volunteering. That can be lethal.
Cornell, NYU, Einstein and Columbia will be donations.

You'll need to apply to more schools than than in NY, you know.

I hear you and ill look for schools, but I should mention that my 400 hours at the hospital most of which is doing nonclincal activities like running the gift shop and planning events not really patient interaction so wouldnt that be enough? and another thing is that my only weakness just nonclinical? THANK U SMMMMM

No, that's clinical-adjacent volunteering, but isn't the strongest clinical or non-clinical activity you can do (as you have described it.... again please fill out a WAMC profile with details). I see no campus involvement, so I don't even get a sense you enjoy working with your peers; that's got to change once you are a med student.

Service orientation is about a commitment to serve others' needs in a humble role (not as a subject-matter expert). Customer service can overlap, but it's not sufficient. Planning events is logistics and could be related to your job responsibilities and organizational skills, but it's not service orientation. You must have 150 hours of activities such as food distribution, shelter volunteer, job/tax preparation, legal support, transportation services, or housing rehabilitation or your file may be screened out at most schools. Your lack of non-clinical community service orientation experience isn't a weakness, it could be lethal to your application.

What are your prehealth advisors telling you about your chances?

On your numbers and being a NY resident alone, you list all your in-state options. I would hope your connection as a state resident may help you, but the lack of community service experience would still make me pause. My adcom faculty are going to ask me what makes you someone they want to have at their school, and based on what has been provided here, I have nothing to present.

Accumulate another 50 hours at hospice before you submit your application. I suggest these schools if you have those hours:
