Hello all! I know that this is early for WAMC but I was thinking about retaking MCAT but wanted to see if this is necessary. Just for context I am Chinese and will be taking two gap years by the time I am in medical school (hopefully). Here are my stats below.
  • MCAT: 497/504/502
  • Major: Biochemistry, T15 University
  • GPA: 3.76 sGPA: 3.72
  • Extracurriculars:
    • Asian American Science Organization: E-board and bronze volunteering award (1000 hours)
    • D1 Sport: played for a top 15 ranked D1 school for my undergrad, received multiple academic awards from NCAA
  • Volunteering:
    • Clinical: Hospice volunteer~150 hours
      • Helped with answering call lights and moving patients
    • Nonclinical: Food pantry~100 hours
      • Helped with food drives and meal time prep
    • Nonclinical: Homeless shelters~200 hours
      • Served as a guidance counselor for homeless people; aided in mental health support
    • Nonclinical: Sports for youth~100 hours
      • Volunteered with a local low income sports camp
  • Lab Experience
    • 500 hours: not published but did a lot of base work for future projects
  • Shadowing
    • 100 hours: multiple specialties from family med to orthopedic surgery
      • 50 hours from DO
  • Work
    • Clinical: Working as an EMT and accumulated 2,000 hours
      • Lots of codes and one on one patient care
    • Non-clinical: high school math tutor~200 hours (more for extra cash than anything else)
I am mostly looking at DO and was just wondering if my stats would be good enough to apply this upcoming cycle. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you again!

You are competitive for most DO schools with your stats and I suggest these:
CCOM
DMU-COM
MU-COM
KCU-COM
ATSU-KCOM
AZCOM
TUNCOM
UIWSOM
ACOM
CUSOM
WVSOM
PCOM (all schools)
LECOM (all schools)
Touro-NY
NYITCOM
You could try a few MD schools and I suggest these:
Illinois
Southern Illinois
Rosalind Franklin
Medical College Wisconsin
Oakland Beaumont
Alice Walton
Belmont
Roseman (when it opens)
Methodist (when it opens)

I think you have the foundation. Now I want a sense of your purpose as a physician. When were the three MCAT scores taken? Did you mention state of residence?
Thank you for the response! I live in Illinois with the MCAT scores of 497 12/2023, 504 05/2023, 502 07/2024. I did not apply last year since I received my third MCAT score too late to apply AACOMAS to be a solid enough applicant.
As for my purpose of being a physician, I did not mention above with the activities but I took care of both my grandparents since I was 8 or 9. They both only spoke Chinese so I would translate many of their medical appointments; I fell in love with medicine going to their appointments and interacting with the amazing doctors that they had. I took my freshman college year remote (during COVID-19 but I had the option to go to campus) to take care of my grandfather when he was in hospice. Having that as my introduction to medicine made my connection to this field very personal.
I'll be honest; taking a gap year was the last thing I wanted to do after undergrad, especially since I was actively working to build up my hours doing research and working clinical jobs to build up my application for an immediate entry into medical school. But I think working in the medical field a little longer has taught me a lot about patient care and how much impact good doctors who care about their patients have on medicine. I have seen my fair share of codes where doctors do what they want to do instead of what the patient wants or, on the other side, doctors who take the time to talk to the family and see the best treatment options for the patient. These differences in patient care are what made me love medicine from the start and makes me want to be a physician.

Thank you so much for this list. Will definitely start looking at these schools.
