Hey everyone! Looking for advice on my application and have a few questions. I'm 24F and this will be my first time applying. I took a break to gain more independence and experience after graduating right when the pandemic was hitting the US hard. My interests right now lie in small animal GP, but I'd love to gain some more experience with exotics while in school if the opportunity arises.
Schools: Mizzou (in-state), Illinois, North Carolina, Colorado, Purdue, Iowa
Cumulative GPA: 3.72
science GPA: 3.52 (not including math or animal sciences)
last 45: 3.69
Bachelor's of Science: Biomedical Science (Spring 2020)
Minor: German
GRE results: N/A
Veterinary Experience:
-1440hrs as a small animal vet tech (current full-time job, hours reflect experience to this date)
-88 hours equine shadowing
Animal Experience:
-560 hrs Exotic/Pocket pets as a pet store employee (estimated 2 hrs per day spent directly with animals)
-936 hrs Dog Kennel/Daycare attendant
-49hrs Cattle AI class
-72hrs Horse Science Class
Research Experience:
Not sure if I should include these since they weren't in a traditional lab setting and unfortunately got cut short due to the pandemic shutting things down in March 2020. Both of these took place in Spring 2020:
-Deaf studies: Gathered research and wrote a comprehensive literature review on the potential usage of animal-assisted therapy for audiology and speech-language pathology in fulfillment of the university's honors program. Also assisted graduate students collect articles for their own research endeavors.
-Bioinformatics: Worked in a small group setting to assist a professor prepare materials for his future course on bioinformatics. Studied the basics of Python and reviewed various techniques for genome sequencing.
Awards/scholarships:
-Regent's Scholarship (covered 15 credits per semester). Maintained throughout 4 years of studies.
-Dean's List for 3 semesters
-Cum Laude
-Graduated with Honors distinction by completing my uni's honors program
Extracurriculars:
-Chemistry Fraternity president (1 sem), vice president (1 sem), master of ceremonies (2 sem). Total membership for 7 semesters.
-Pre-Veterinary Club treasurer (2 sem). Total membership 5 semesters
-Delta Tau Alpha Agricultural Honors Society. Total membership 4 semesters
-German Club. Total membership of 4 semesters
Employment:
-Full-time vet tech at a 4 doctor small animal practice (November-Current).
-Guest Advisor at a pet store (1 year)
-Daycare and Kennel Attendant (2 years)
-Facilities Management at my university (1 year)
Now that I'm finally writing everything out, I feel like I'm lacking a bit when it comes to varied veterinary experience. I'm working 40hrs a week at my current practice, so my small animal vet hours will continue to climb, but we only see dogs and cats. However, I'm working as a non-certified tech -- running rooms, prepping surgeries, pulling blood, all that good stuff. I've also assisted in a few house calls, mainly euths. I'm hoping this experience will boost my application. I'm also going to try and shadow an equine vet some more on my off days to at least bring me above the 100hr mark in that category. I just won't have any hours for large animal or exotic.
Some application questions:
-I held multiple different positions in my chem fraternity. When putting this on my application, should I make a separate post for each position? Or just one for the total 7 semesters and go into detail in my explanation?
-Is it worth it to put my hours from a cattle ai course and horse science class? It adds a bit of diversity to my animal experience, but its not a whole lot.
-I worked full-time at a pet store for over a year. I estimated about 2hrs per day actually spent directly handling the exotics and pocket pets, with the rest being spent assisting customers, answering phones, cashiering, stocking, etc. I was only going to put the 2hrs per day as my experience hours, not the full 8. Is that how I should estimate it or put down the full 8?
Any other general advice is greatly appreciated! My goal school is Mizzou, so if anyone has any thoughts on my chances there please share.
