1. cGPA 3.52, sGPA 3.6 Major: Biochemistry Biophysics at Rensselaer Poly. (its one major), minor in Psychology

2. 506, 129, 124, 126, 127 (I might retake over the summer)

3. Experience:
College Athlete: 2.5 years Track and Field
Shadowing Trauma Surgeon Fellow DO 24 hours, as well as got to attend a cadaver lab for paramedic training 8 hours
Global Medical Brigade Member, FCA member, started an MCAT study group at my college
Organic Chemistry TA 2 semesters Organic Chemistry Lab Facilitator 2 semesters

4. Volunteering: 100+ hours
Volunteered with USO feeding troops in training
Wrapped presents to give to underprivileged kids for Christmas
Provided Free online tutoring to students during the pandemic
Miscellaneous Volunteering with my Church
Eagle Scout (I know it isnt a college acheivement, but some people said it helped)
Over the summer I am applying I will also be doing volunteering at a military hospital

5. Race:
Mixed Hispanic, Asian, and African American (not to sure how URM works with mixed students). I was also adopted to a Caucasian family to blur the lines even more. No one in my family works in medicine, so I am the first in my family to pursue it. That definitely posed a barrier in which I did not know how to enter the field.

6. Work 200+ hours
Food Delivery Driver, worked a lot during the pandemic as an essential worker to provide food delivery in underprivileged areas

7. Miscellaneous:
Awards: Deans List x1, Athletic Conference Honor Roll x1
A good GPA Trend upward

I do not know if this is a big thing either but I am trying to become a military physician. I talked about it in the personal statement I submitted to my schools premed board and the surgeon I shadowed under talked about it in his recommendation letter as well.

Where is your state of residence ?
Texas, Rensselaer Poly. is in NY (my undergrad.), and my parents are retired military. I know that military dependents can sometimes have variable residency. I was looking at TCU MD, or UNT DO in state. Other interests are Arkansas, Tulane, OK State DO, UAB, & AT Mesa. I know MDs would be kind of a stretch. My top choice is USUHS, but its looking like a pipe dream with my low score. The surgeon I shadowed did his residency at UC Davis so i might apply there as a long shot.

On what you wrote, I think you have a pretty good shot. I think you aware of this but your two most glaring weaknesses are probably your lack of clinical volunteering (which you mentioned you would address over the summer) and your MCAT score (which you mentioned retaking). You could also bolster your regular volunteer hours a bit but the clinical volunteering will likely cover that.

Your GPA is not great but not terrible so I doubt programs will rule you out automatically for that. I also think being a college athlete is a relatively unique part of your application which will help. As long as you craft a good narrative in your personal statement and apply broadly, I'd say your chances are decent for MD and definitely good for DO.

If you have no research experience, while not a hard requirement, it may be beneficial to get your feet wet with some to improve your chances as well.

Good luck!

Appreciate it! I just got done feeling sorry for myself after getting my MCAT score back. I am a junior rn and applying in may. My school isnt even allowing my year on campus and undergrad research is nonexistent due to COVID precautions. I have talked to a professor about research for two semesters now but because of COVID he hasnt been able to take me on. I might be able to do research my senior year as a thesis class for my senior year but I dont think that would end up on my application.

Apply to all your Texas MD schools and USUHS. You could also add Loma Linda and TCU-UNT.
You are competitive for all DO schools and I suggest these:
TCOM
Sam Houston State
UIWSOM
TUNCOM
AZCOM
KCU-COM
ATSU-KCOM
DMU-COM
MU-COM
CUSOM
VCOM (all schools except Monroe)
Touro-NY
PCOM
LECOM (all schools)
ACOM
