This is my first post, so bear with me...I got accepted as an alternate for Oregon State this coming cycle as an OOS applicant. I have not really considered OSU before when I started applying because I did not think I would get in at all. Nonetheless, I applied anyways because it was a cheaper option for OOS and I love the area and the program and the small class size. Ultimately, I would like to go there if given the opportunity.
I was wondering if anyone here is from Oregon and was accepted after getting off the alternate list. If so, how long did it take for you to get a response and how did you manage receiving/rejecting other offers if they came after the April 15th national acceptance day deadline? Does anyone know how many alternate positions are given out? I just want to see what is the likelihood of eventually receiving an acceptance from Oregon. Thank you!

I am an IS student but I got an acceptance and was not waitlisted. @johnsmith123 was accepted off the waitlist iirc

In my non expert opinion it seems like they are more likely to pull people off the waitlist if they express interest to the school by staying connected via email etc. How many they accept off the waitlist. For our year it was quite a few, over 5 slots. Some years it is much fewer. It just depends on how many accept their seats. I would not expect to hear anything until after the deadline in April.

@ziggyandjazzy hit it spot on. I was in the first batch of applicants to get called off the wait-list on 4/19. You definitely won't know until after the 4/15 deadline. If they have spots open still, they need to go through applications again and essentially rank them before extending offers. We had an abnormally high number of alternate spots for OOS, 9 total. Tess will keep you updated throughout the process. I'd say there's a decent chance of getting off the wait-list with the new increase in class size to 72, but there are some years where they don't even need the alternate list. Good luck! It's super stressful being an alternate but hopefully it helps knowing that you most likely won't hear anything until a few days after the deadline.

Thank you! It definitely is stressful being in the alternate list. Did you do as @ziggyandjazzy suggested and emailed Tess reiterating your interest to remain in the alternate list? If so, how often did you keep in touch with Tess? I was thinking like once a month or so? I just do not want to feel like I am going to be pestering her for just a potential spot in the class. Thank you for your input!

You definitely need to confirm once, otherwise you'll be removed. I didn't ask any more after that, but I did ask for updates right before the deadline and immediately after it. She gladly told me how many spots were available after the deadline and then let me know when they'd have a decision by.

I think once a month sounds a bit excessive. I would follow @johnsmith123 's advice!

This part hasn’t been answered yet, so I’ll chime in about this part.
If you’re accepted somewhere else before the deadline, accept your spot there(ideally at the cheapest option if you have multiple acceptances) and pay whatever deposit they have to secure your seat. If you then get accepted to Oregon state after the deadline and you want to go there instead, you would accept that offer and pay the deposit if they have one and then contact your initial school and tell them you received an offer elsewhere and will be attending and would like to remove yourself from initial school’s class. You’ll lose your deposit, but a $500 deposit is nothing compared to $10k+(or however much the difference is) in COA savings.

If you get an offer from School C off their waitlist after the deadline and would prefer that over School A and haven’t heard back from OSU, you can definitely accept School C and pay their deposit, decline at School A, and then continue waiting for OSU if you want (or Vice versa with school C/OSU), you’d just lose whatever School C’s deposit is too.
