**Thesewill be my stats for next cycle (kinda extrapolating GPA, assuming it'll stay fixed, kinda a big assumption, but let's pretend for the sake of pretending):

**Major: Management (healthcare administration specialty), NY Resident
Demographics: Middle Class, White

**Science Classes:
-Bio I and II
-Chem I and II
-Ochem I and II
-Phys I and II
-Micro
-Viro

**cGPA: 3.77
sGPA: 3.82

Already took my MCAT, but this cycle is kinda late: 38 (12 VR, 14 PS, 12 BS), going next cycle. I have nothing ahead of me.

**Volunteering: Again, running the numbers for next cycle-
200 hours clinical at institution 1 (done here)
75 hours clinical institution 2 (going off of rate of volunteering, already counted holidays)
150 hours nonclinical institution 3 (going off of rate of volunteering, already counted holidays)
40 hours mixed pro-bono events (these are already fixed)

Research: 1 year in Group A (Public Health and Economics of Medicine) - 100 hours (done)
2 years in lab B (Virology)- 250 hours (going off rates)
SURF at a D1 institution (Microbiology)- 100 hours (done)

No pubs, but good LORs, good experiences with professors, I can talk about my projects with a conscience, 3 Poster presentations about research from Group A, 1 Poster presentation about the SURF results.

Employment:
-Accounting/Economics tutor for 1 year at Uni (done with employment)
-Accounting/finance intern at a hospital, then assistant cost analyst for 2 years (it was very math, I've taken courses in mathematical economics dependent DFQ, Lin Algebra, etc) (done with employment)

School list:

---NY Schools:

-NY Institute of Technology (DO, I know)
-Sinai
-Einstein
-Columbia
-Albany
-NYU
-Stony Brook

---Non NY Schools
-UCLA
-UCSD
-UC Riverside
-Case Western
-UChicago
-Duke
-Dartmouth
-Yale
-Penn
-Vanderbilt
-Wake Forest
-Tulane
-Emory

This is a very top heavy list. You have a great application, but just to be sure, i'd add some other mid tier/not very high tier schools in there. How about the SUNYs? Rochester? Temple, GT, GW, NYMC? Also, since your numbers are in line, how about michigan?

Nothing wrong with aiming high. But it is late in the cycle already for MD schools.

Goro suggests:

-NY Institute of Technology (DO, I know)
If you're going to try NYIT, you might as well try Touro-NY.
Hofstra
-Sinai
-Einstein
-Columbia
Cornell
-Albany
-NYU
-Stony Brook
SUNY Downstate
Rochester
-UCLA
-UCSD
--Case Western
-Duke
-Dartmouth
-Yale OR Stanford
-Penn
-Vanderbilt
-Wake Forest
-Tulane
-Emory
U Miami
Loyola
Pitt
Baylor
Northwestern
U VT
U MI or U VA
U CT
U CO
U So FL
USC

Thanks Goro! I tried to stay away from Yale/Stanford because browsing threads these forums tried to spook me into believing it's for people with 40+, 500 hours of research, and 1000 hours volunteering (hyperbole, but you get the drift). I'll trust you though, considering your ethos in the matter. Thanks a lot! You mentioned BCM, and I know Baylor is a private Texas school....but UTSW is a public Texas school which is also good. I understand though that they're biased for 90% Texan residents. Do you think it'd be a stretch to shoot for UTSW too?

I'd look into SUNYs as well! You think UMich is a stretch? I had the perception that the applicants there are stacked. Thanks!

Well, considering your list, you're applying to a lot of top tier schools whose applicants are "stacked." So I thought you might want to consider UM if you're thinking about applying to all these top schools.

You are definitely in range for us here at Michigan next cycle. Your numbers are solid and your extracurriculars are fine. Unless your PS or letters are god awful, you would 100% get an interview. At that point, with your application, if you did well at the interview I'd be shocked if you weren't accepted.

Numbers aren't the end-all be-all here and we are actively trying to find people that fit into our culture of combined academic excellence and friendliness.

Apply early, make sure your PS is good, make sure your letters are good, and you're all set as far as the U of M is concerned. Remember, 50% of our class is out-of-state. 🙂

Awesome. I'm a good public speaker (being a "business" related major, I've taken a lot of communication courses, and had to publicly speak a lot) so hopefully my interview is good. My LORs are the two professors that I do research under and my favorite DFQ professor (I visit her office regularly and she even offered an LOR). I'm still trying to form my PS statement.

I strongly disagree with this statement. While a 3.8 and 38 are great stats, saying that anyone will "100% get an interview" at a top 15 school is naive and unrealistic. I think the OP has a good chance at schools like UMich, but given the relatively average EC's falsely assuring him that he's a "shoe in" at UMich is misleading.

You realize UMich has auto-interviews based off of GPA/MCAT combos, correct? OP passes those cutoffs. Unless he had something that would lead to that offer being rescinded, he would be interviewed. And if he interviews well he has a very good (read, NOT 100%) chance of then being accepted.

As someone who actually attends the school in question, and has for several years, I feel quite comfortable in my statements to the OP. I wouldn't remotely say he's guaranteed an interview at the other top 10 schools, since they don't have a similar process.

I have trouble believing this. I'm applying this cycle (including UMich) with higher stats than the OP and I haven't received an II from Michigan yet; so if he passes these supposed "auto-interview cutoffs" I should have received one. Your statement also contradicts the experiences of many individuals in the thread this year ( i.e. @gettheleadout is on hold, and I guarantee he passed any "auto-interview" metric).

http://www.accepted.com/chat/transcripts/2007/med06132007_michigan.aspx ctrl+f automatic and read the response. This is from 2007. I'll speak with my contact in admissions to check on the current status of cut-offs, both regarding their presence and the values.

In the meantime I'll run off my understanding up to this year, which has been consistent with the 2007 answer. Is it possible that your application wasn't in quickly enough for the first round of auto-interviews? Is it possible that your application hasn't been reviewed yet by the committee?

I've been complete and "Under Review" since 7/2, so I was definitely complete before the first II's were sent out.

Edit: I just read your link, and I meet the 3.8/38 OOS requirements and I went to a "top" institution. Unless they changed the auto-interview to ludicrous stats (i.e. 4.0/42+), I think its safe to say their policy has changed and they evaluate all applications holistically.

Tough call on UTSW; if you have the time for secondaries, and really, really want to go there (and can handle 100 degree summer heat from mid-May to mid-Sept, and have a hankering for great barbeque, then it's worth a shot.

UM doesn't do auto's anymore. They still did back in 2010 though.
