Hi all,

Current Junior wanting to know if I should apply in May or take a gap year and retake the mcat in August.

LORs: OK to GOOD letters from O-Chem Prof, PI, Volunteer Coordinator/Previous Boss

Clinical Experience: 600 hours as a COVID screener, 500 hours as a phlebotomist

Clinical Volunteering: Only 24 hours transporting patients

Non-clinical Volunteering: Tutoring kids at middle school, spending time with people who are victims of domestic abuse, Teaching Tennis. I have 200 hours teaching tennis but the other 2 activities I have less then 30 in each.

Leadership: Treasurer for Business Health Club, O-Chem TA ( for 2 semesters)

Research: about 700 hours in an neuro lab w no pubs. Casual lab rat stuff

Shadowing: 60ish hours across anesthesia family medicine and ER.

Important to NOTE: I am a middle class Asian Male in Texas, only applying to TMDSAS schools.

Hi all,

Just got my MCAT score back... a 508 (129,125,127,127). Not too happy with it but it is what it is.

ALSO; This is a repost because I would like more feedback. Mods please let me know if I can't do this :/. Thanks in advance.
I don't see that you have posted before. Understand the TOS. What avatar did you previously post?

@wysdoc , what do you think? I think this poster could be okay to apply but for lower tier Texas MD and DO schools. Not sure how that match may work.

Oops sorry I did not mean to include that last part. What’s considered lower tier TX MD? Would A&M be considered lower tier? Or UTMB? When using MSAR, I sit above the 25th percentile for MCAT and GPA for A&M, and for the MCAT for UTMB…but this is when I’m looking at MATRICULATED students and not accepted students.

yes @wysdoc what do you think??

The most important question is: do you feel ready now?
Can you get your info organized and ready to submit early in the year? In Texas that's important. Try to submit by June.

Would trying to do all that and still do well in your classes make you stressed and miserable? Then wait until next year.

Your GPA is good with an upward trend. It will be important to continue that trend in senior year, so is your Fall term schedule light enough to let you have time to work on essays and keep up with your classes? Putting thought into the secondary essays and doing a nice job with them gives the school a fuller picture of you.
You can apply to all the TMDSAS schools for one application fee. Apply to them all and the DO schools.

Here are the charts for the last 3 years for GPA and MCAT for TMDSAS:

Thanks so much for your reply. So you think I would have a good shot at Texas schools? When looking at the chart it seems like my stats are well below matriculants, also doesnt hell that I am a ORM. I have a light Spring Semester so it seems like I can dedicate good time to my essays and submit in May.

I just want to mention for the sake of saying: make sure you are reviewing all the information regarding TMDSAS and even attend their office hours.
Thanks for your reply. What do you mean office hours? Any thoughts on my app?

TMDSAS has a thing on Facebook/ YouTube live called office hours, during the application season to help you with your app and answer questions live.
They also have an archive of interviews with every admissions director of TMDSAS schools.
Look for these on the THES (Texas Health Education Service) YouTube Channel. The interviews are listed as "Courage Sessions".

Is there any date available for Texas that shows the acceptance rate for residents and non residents by breakdown of MCAT and GPA ? That would be similar to the GPA-MCAT grid that AMCAS has. I have seen the data for all applicants but I assume the low acceptance rate for non residents skews the results.

@Faha TMDSAS put out an interactive tool in early February where you can search such data, but it's offline right now as they fine-tune it.
Check back here in a couple of weeks: 10 year TMDSAS application stats data
