So little background info, I was originally born and raised in California but moved to Kansas for college, ended up at normal state school and got my BSN. Currently working as a RN in the ER of a level 1 trauma center. GPA wise it was pretty much 3.9 until nursing school hit and then it definetly took a hit. Currently finishing up a DIY postbac at a community college.
  1. cGPA 3.8 and sGPA 3.86. I did do a DIY postbac at a community college. Took Bio1/2, Physics 1/2, and BioChem (which is my biggest concern if schools will screen due to BioChem at CC. PostBac GPA will be 4.0 with 28 hours.
  2. MCAT score: 512 (129/125/129/129). Thinking about retaking but realistically I am happy with all but my CARS score and I don't know how much I can improve in 1 to 2 month
  3. State of residence: KS but family lives in CA and grew up there.
  4. Ethnicity and/or race: Asian
  5. Undergraduate institution: KS state school (R2 category)
  6. Clinical experience (volunteer and non-volunteer): 1200 as a Nurse Intern during school. 2080 as a RN on a Cardiac Transplant Stepdown Floor. 1600 as an RN in a ER of a level 1 trauma center. Will be staying fulltime as a RN for the next year in the ER so another 2080 anticipated hours.
  7. Research experience and productivity: Started in 2020 and have stayed with the same lab since. Will have 1 pub as second author. Did start with another lab last year but will not have any manuscripts by the time I submit primaries. Have presented at mostly regional and 1 national conference. Mostly poster and 1 oral.
  8. Shadowing experience and specialties represented: Cardio Cardiothoracic Surgeon, 2 Cardiologists, 1 Trauma Intensivist/Surgeon, 1 Neuro Intensivist, 1 Neurologist, and 1 Plastic Surgeon
  9. Non-clinical volunteering: 80 hours with our International Office taking International Students on outings in the city in freshmen year and about 60 through a biannual service event host by our Community Service club where I was a site leader.
  10. Other extracurricular activities: 1200 hours in Student Government in leadership positions for both Legislative and Executive branches. 550 hours as a Chem tutor. About 1000ish as a mentor through an annual retreat hosted by our Diversity Office for incoming freshmen and was a mentor for said freshmen during their first year.
  11. Relevant honors or awards: Nominated once for DAISY and received research scholarship/grant money through the Kansas Institutional Development Award
Ultimate goal is MD/PhD but not sure if my stats are competitive enough for it. As for schools, dream schools are either Case Western or one of the UC schools. Will also apply for KU due to their strong instate basis for KS. Besides that I’m sctraching my head for what schools I should apply to. The list below is effective all the schools that have MD/PhD programs that I am considering. Would appreciate help narrowing it down as well as suggestions on other schools. MD/PhD or not. Also, advice on potentially retaking BioChem at a 4 year due to some schools not accepting BioChem at a CC (did get a A though at CC).

You have many state public schools on your list that admit few non residents with no connection to the state. Carle is looking for applicants with an engineering background. Howard mainly admits applicants from the African American community. I suggest these schools with your stats:

Welcome to the forums.

Could you go into more detail why you are thinking MD/PhD as a purpose to be a physician?

Could you break down your clinical experience once you were done with nursing school? I don't want to count the hours you had while you were a student. Same for community service: what have you done since you graduated?

Definitely! For the MD/PhD, I found that I am most interested in the science aspects of healthcare and from my research experience in undergrad, thinking about how it can be applied to clinical medicine was what excited me the most. In essence, I want my career to be bridging the gap between the basic sciences and clinical practice.

For clinical experience after nursing school, I worked for 1 year in a cardiac transplant high acuity floor where we took, heart and liver tx post ICU and LVADs. After that I took a job in the ER of a level 1 trauma center and have been then for about 7 months.

As for community service. I don't have any direct community service since graduation but the lab I am currently with has been on a volunteer basis for a little over 1 year.
