Im going to be a bit vague to not doxx myself but hopefully I can provide enough info for y'all to have meaningful input. Mid 30s male applying broadly, but strong preference for local "low-ranked" MD program in my hometown with rural underserved primary care mission, and big in state bias.

4 years ago I started a heavy equipment business that is essentially synonymous with "rural" and also has public health implications. Business is located in same town as top choice md program. Ive grown the business to 5-10 employees and our revenue/profit is at a point where I would be taking a pay cut as a physician no matter the specialty. Not interested in medicine for money, legitimately passionate about it. Caught the medicine bug late in life after dating a med student/resident and learning about medicine for the first time. Took mcat last weekend, still waiting on score. Hypothetically lets say I got a 515. Thats about what I was getting on FLs.

Was a lazy bum with no purpose in college many years ago and so I've been overcoming a 2.64 cGPA. Now at 2.93 cGPA and 3.45 sGPA. Did DIY postbacc to get all prereqs and just finished this semester. 40 credits at a 3.8 GPA all science classes.

Applying this cycle. Will have 60 hrs volunteering at hospital at time of submission. Recently started scribe job and will have maybe 100 hrs in that too. Shadowing 40 hrs primary care.

No research unless you count some research and development I've done in the business which does have public health implications but maybe its a stretch to call it research for med school purposes. I have glowing letters of rec from recent teachers as well as other local business owners whove seen me build the business and know me personally.

Anyways I greatly appreciate any input as my situation is maybe a bit strange? Definitely feel like Im rushing to apply this cycle but I dont want to miss the opportunity. Thanks.

Keep up your clinical and volunteer work. I think you have a decent shot at your local state school, especially if you get a decent (510+) MCAT score. Research isn’t nearly as important as clinical or service activities.

Thanks for the reply's everyone, I will post MCAT in a few weeks once scores are out

Have you met with the admissions reps at your medical school next door? What do they suggest? (Obviously things clear up with your MCAT.
Great question, I have not yet because I was concerned that contacting them too much would be a bother? Is this not the case? Apologies for the dumb questions, I am pretty ignorant of the social side of the application process.

My girlfriend is a current resident there and I am doing all of my shadowing and clinical volunteering at the hospital attached to the med school. One of my letters of recommendation is coming from their undergraduate professor in biochemistry. Definitely trying to tailor my application around this school but any other advice on things to do to increase my chances is greatly appreciated.

Another 3 things that could be helpful:

1. I know the owner of the business who is building their new med school building and he has subcontracted heavy equipment work to me in the past. Do you think this would be a good person to ask about a letter of rec or to send an email on my behalf?

2. Another one of their undergraduate professors I know well through work, he has inspected my work as he works in my industry too and we are pretty chummy. Could ask him for letter of rec too or ask him to put a good word in?

3. I've worked extensively with a department director of the local health dept in my work and he could speak to my work experience as well, tying it into public health.

Would they be impressed by this or turned off? Idk what these people want to see, help me please lmao.

1 is a definite no.

I would be fine with the other two on face value.

We pay admissions officers to field your questions. It's not a bother (it can be a welcome respite).

Let us know when you have an MCAT score!
Ok so just got my score back and unfortunately it was a 507, (127,128,125,127). My diagnostic FL was a 509 and the only other FL I took was a 513 but I guess it makes sense given I only studied part time for 3 weeks. Just tried to rush it but that's neither here nor there, planning to study next 9 months and retake in March for the potential next cycle unless y'all advise me differently.

As for the state school in my hometown, their average matriculant MCAT is exactly 507 FYI, but I felt like with the low GPA I needed to really blow them away with a good MCAT. Thanks in advance everyone for your advice. Take care.
