Late 30s, Alabama resident, interested in shelter medicine. My science prereqs were all >10 years ago and I have not taken microbiology so my list of eligible school was very limited this cycle and I couldn't apply to some of the more holistic schools. I am applying this year hoping to get in without taking additional classes. If I don't get in this cycle, I will take microbiology, retake some prereqs, and take a few upper level science courses in the 2027-8 school year and reapply in the 28-29 cycle.
I applied to Auburn (IS), Mizzou, Arizona, Utah State, and Washington State. I will be using the GI Bill for vet school and am not interested in island schools or private schools without yellow ribbon programs.
Cumulative GPA: 3.29
science GPA: 2.90
last 45: 3.18 (last 26 hours/2 semesters is 3.57. I have a semester with a 2.19 GPA that will fall out of my last 45 if I take more classes)
Any degrees achieved
BA in chemistry with minors in biology and military science

Veterinary Experience 1850 hours:
-110 hours shadowing at a SA and exotics GP
-1750 hours as a vet assistant at a municipal shelter doing HQHVSN and providing medical care for 5k animals annually. The shelter doesn't employ any techs. A small amount of wildlife, exotics, and LA is included here.
Animal Experience 3500 hours:
-2000 hours fostering cats, including many high medical needs kittens (panleuk, calici, ringworm, tube feeding, bottle babies, etc)
-1500 hours as cat program manager for a rescue, in charge of foster homes, medical needs, and adoptions

-4 year ROTC scholarship
-distinguished honor graduate for a highly technical weapons system course

I wrote my personal statement about how a foster kitten who I didn't have the skills to save made me want to go into vet med, and how my careers in the Army and engineering prepared me to be a vet. I wrote my explanation statement about dropping out of school after being removed from ROTC for Don't Ask, Don't Tell and losing my scholarship, but coming back after the policy was repealed.
