WAMC: reapply vs take school offer- high exp hours, non trad

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I would only decline an acceptance if you are OK with not being guaranteed another one this cycle and having to reapply a 3rd time. If that’s not something you are comfortable with id accept the offer and go.

You can also look into transferring to a stateside school once you are in. It's hard to do but technically possible. Most schools only allow transfers from an out of US school (avma accredited) to a state side. So speak with the schools you want to transfer to and see if they allow it and how to position yourself for a possible transfer

I applied to many schools last cycle, was waitlisted at U Sydney, LMU, interview waitlisted at KSU, and accepted to UAGM.
You didn't get a lot of official love from the schools last year, so if you are committed to not going to UAGM at this time, be sure to be at peace with the fact you might never become a doctor.

Likewise, UAGM has a letter of reasonable assurance at this time. So as the first class, you would be considered as coming from an accredited vet school. A heinously overpriced vet school, but you would not be jumping over other hurdles to come back to the states.

Likewise in regards to transfer, don't count on it because they are not accredited.
I would apply to: LMU, LIU, Midwestern, U of Az, KSU, UC Davis, Iowa. Probably Tufts as well.
Depending on if the stats you're reporting are your new ones, do not apply to UC Davis unless you're a California resident. That's a waste of money, to be honest.

Why are you considering these schools and not others?

so sorry for the delay in reply, I was taking a little mentally health driven SDN break. 😀

you are right about the official love thing/ being at peace with never becoming a doctor. I am trying to sort through all my feelings while also trying to figure out a way to make it work. I'd really like to go. Between the relocation and the cost of tuition, it's just so expensive. I did the math before I applied, but as with many other things- many additional costs add up.

And yes- agree on cost, it is not good. I do want to add that there are supposedly going to be scholarship opportunities as we move into second, third and fourth years. I am also considering : costs to continue to take course work as some of the pre- reqs are shifting over time and I need to remain competitive as a candidate, the interest accrued on my existing student loans for an additional cycle or two, as well as another year of me taking classes and working PT or not at all- it's hard to work full time and go to school with kids and do really well.

I also want to add- yes the cost of tuition is a lot- for many of these schools but this school specifically!- but operating costs as a whole are probably a lot- getting equipment there, salaries etc bc PR does not have as much funding in general. so I do understand to an extent.

I would not be looking to transfer (I've learned at the grad level that is really challenging and often quite expensive!) , but I can apparently do my clinical year possibly at one of the schools in the states (they have announced some contracts and apparently some are in the works) or at their teaching hospital- provided it's built and operational in time.

Lastly, I am considering these schools and not others due to one of my immediate family members who would be relocating with me being in need of gender affirming care, as well as work opportunities for my partner; both of these things do make the list more narrow than it would or could be. I do have concerns about both of these things in Puerto Rico, as well, but we would live in the metro.

I am always, always open to school suggestions, of course. thanks for your input! <3
