Undergrad Attended: UMass
Major: Bio
Minor: None
Minority? No
Reapplicant? No
Nontrad? No

Shadowing Experience: 200 hours of general/prosth
Volunteering Experience:
  • 150 hours volunteering at VA hospital in the prosthetics department.
  • 50 hours at community food pantry
  • 15 hours at free dental clinic
  • 50-75 hours of community outreach while abroad (sports/arts and crafts with kids, swim lessons for adults and kids, educating them about climate change and ocean acidification, etc)
Employment: ~100 hours working for Meals on Wheels (delivered nutritious meals to elderly/disabled and completed wellness checks)
~ 1000 hours working as a grounds crew worker on a country club golf course
~ 500 hours at a gym working front desk/facility monitor
~ 500 hours as a cashier at local grocery store
~ 100 hours as a coach at a youth soccer summer camp

Other Extracurriculars:
  • UMass Men’s Club Lacrosse (several practices a week, scrimmages in fall, full season in spring, ~300-500 hours so far)
  • Biology TA (2 semesters, I graded work, hosted problem solving sessions for extra practice, held exam reviews, and proctored)
  • Member of Pre-Dental Society and Habitats for Humanity
  • Avid golfer, painter, chess player, and weight lifter
Have you volunteered/shadowed/attended events at any dental schools? Tufts impressions day, UConn admissions event with their dean of admissions
Relevant Honors or Awards: Abigail and Adams scholarship recipient, Dean’s List every semester thus far
LOR type and strength: Committee letter from pre health department with 4 letters, I was unable to read them so the strengths are my presumptions: 1) science professor I TA'ed for (strong), 2) science professor I had for classes (avg), 3) general dentist I shadowed (strong), 4) prosthodontist I shadowed (strong)
Misc Info/Things not stated elsewhere/Red Flags:
School list: I recently applied to the following 10 schools, though I am aware many of them are extremely competitive, which brings me here. Should I apply to a couple more schools, such as UNE, to try to ensure I don't have to reapply next year due to not getting an acceptance? Ideally, I would like to stay on the East Coast and close to home, which makes UNE a pretty obvious addition if I am to add schools. Recommendations for additional schools are greatly welcome

Schools I have applied to:
  • Harvard
  • UPenn
  • Columbia
  • Tufts
  • BU
  • UMich
  • UConn
  • UNC
  • UMaryland
  • Temple

Research: None so far. I will be going abroad in the spring and will be conducting marine bio research while I’m there.

first 6 are in the top 10-12 most difficult to get into schools (outside of texas) in the country
yes, your application is stellar, but it is difficult to know which of these and how many of these you will get interviews/acceptances at
you really only have 1 inline school
and 3 safeties are a ton, especially since you are likely to suffer pretty bad from yield management, despite the fact that boston and tufts are IS for you...

the TLDR is to add some more in-range schools, UNE is a decent choice
also look into publics that offer in-state tuition after 1 year...

I think you have a very strong shot, pending everything else in your application is solid. Regionally for insurance (though yield protection likely) would be Buffalo, UNE and Rutgers. I agree pick some publics where you get in-state tuition after D1. I think Ohio State is one, Pittsburgh?, maybe UAB if you want to go South? I'd still consider LECOM because tuition is relatively low but you'd need to make sure it's a good fit.

I would consider adding a safety school that doesnt require supplemental application, I think Rutgers does not have one anymore and same with like south carolina or something of that nature.

Thank you guys for the feedback. I'm looking to add 3 or so schools. UNE and Pitt for sure, and Buffalo or OSU. Do you think these would qualify as "in line," or am I still likely to be subject to yield protection?

those are all in-range
you more likely suffer yield management at the privates...
