Hello everyone! I'm working on my application and just finished my SMP's coursework, going into the 2nd year to complete a lab thesis which will be due in April 2026. Needed some help on how to evaluate my application - feel like I occupy both ends of the spectrum. I'd appreciate any insight, thank you in advance.
  1. Undergrad: cGPA: 3.08; sGPA: 2.89
  2. SMP: 4.0
  3. MCAT: 513 (130/126/128/129) (Test Center Issue - Lost time on CARS); 516 (131/128/130/127)
  4. Residence: Florida (US Citizen - born in FL) - Grew up between Florida and Pakistan
  5. Ethnicity: Pakistani-American Male
  6. State School (FL - Public)
  7. Clinical experience: 1500 hours
    1. 1200 OR Assistant (Paid)
    2. 300 MA/Scribe (Volunteer)
    3. MA for upcoming year anticipating 600+ hours
  8. Research: 200 hours as an intern - Worked on multiple projects but no pubs/posters
    1. Working on SMP lab thesis anticipating 600+ hours upcoming year
  9. Shadowing experience: 58 hours (Hospitalist + Shadowing Course at Undergrad)
    1. Was told scribing experience can account for shadowing?
  10. Non-clinical volunteering: 24 hours (Guest Services at Hospital) - I was considering working on this during this upcoming year but worried it wouldn't make a difference
  11. Other: Future activities will be referenced in committee letter from SMP; All clinical experience is with underserved populations - stems from themes in PS, Want to direct future towards healthcare equity/community health

Not really sure how to go about making a list because of the GPA discrepancy - have no idea what to shoot for and if I’m already shooting too high. Built list thus far on schools that I've heard reward reinvention.

Thanks again.

Welcome to the forums.

Your SMP GPA and letter of support will help adcoms look at what's important with your academics. You should know what schools have accepted students who attended your SMP in the past few years; your directors should know best.

Yes, some of your scribing can count for shadowing.

Ideally you should have more non-clinical community service, but I'm going to hope that your SMP committee will present it well.

Thanks for the insight, I really appreciate it.

That being said, I was hoping someone might be able to suggest a few specific schools. I’ve seen the general outcomes list from my SMP but it’s broad and not tailored to individual stats. My program encouraged me to view my upward GPA trend with more regard and to not be overly cautious when building my list, but I’m still not entirely sure what to do with that advice especially given the GPA/MCAT discrepancy.

If anyone has suggestions for schools that tend to reward reinvention or have taken strong SMP students in similar situations, I’d really appreciate it.

This is a strong hint that your SMP will encourage adcoms to look at your academic preparation in this light. The schools that have accepted students from the SMP is a good marker for programs that rewards reinventors at their program so don't discard that list too quickly. Seek a mission fit among those programs that Faha did not list when it comes to fulfilling your purpose as a future physician and medical student.
