Please let me know if you see any glaring gaps on my app that I could fix before I apply in May! Feedback on the school list is highly appreciated.

*Note*: I was a Texas resident, but I have now rented in Ohio for two years, briefly worked a job, paid some taxes, and I have an Ohio DL. Does this make me an Ohio resident?
  1. cGPA: 3.98 / sGPA: 3.96
  2. MCAT: 515 (126/131/128/130)
  3. State of Residence: Probably Ohio*? Strong ties to Texas (explanation above)
  4. Ethnicity/race: ORM
  5. University: Public in Ohio
  6. Clinical experience:
    1. 80 hours hospital volunteering (wide exposure)
    2. 120 hours hospice volunteering (will be 180 at time of application) (most meaningful experience)
  7. Research:
    1. 100 hours in wet lab
    2. 350 hours in public health data science research with underserved population (will be 400 at application), 3 posters (minor awards), honors thesis, assisted in hosting and planning a conference
  8. Shadowing:
    1. 70 hours in specialties (no primary care)
    2. 5 hours in Europe and South America
  9. Non-clinical volunteering:
    1. 150 hours in 4 areas
  10. Extracurriculars:
    1. 500 hours (will be 600 at application) in a band
    2. 150 hours of rural health educational program
  11. Leadership:
    1. 50 hours as VP of a recreational club for 2 years
    2. 130 hours significant leadership in cultural exchange program in South America
I went conservative on my hours recommendations, so adding 20 percent to some categories would not be unreasonable. I put grades first, and then tried to enjoy the rest of my time in undergrad, and I think that shows.

Anything on here that I listed as over 100 hours I would consider to be very meaningful and I have plenty to say about.

I’ve ordered the list purely on the stats on the MSAR and how I compare, higher to lower chances of acceptance. I know there are no true safety schools! Just included that to show you guys my headspace in building the list.

Staying in Ohio is HIGHLY preferred, and staying within a short plane flight is a must.

Loyola, St. Louis and Georgetown expect far more non clinical hours than you have. What is the nature of your 150 hours of non clinical volunteering ?

Why do you say you have Ohio residency... sort of? Toledo, NEOMED, and Wright State like in-state applicants, especially if they have grown up in and around their respective parts of Ohio. Do you align with the mission of these programs?

Thank you for your comment! I mentioned in the post that I am from Texas, but I am at school in Ohio, I have worked a short job, paid taxes, rented for two years, and my DL is Ohio. From what I am reading online, it seems that could give me Ohio resident status, but I'm still confused!

In terms of how I align with Ohio state schools, I don't know much more than the mission statements (which I would like to change by visiting), but I align decently with Toledo, NEOMED, and Wright State, especially the community-centered part of NEOMED's statement. I've visited the Wright State area many times and I love the community of Dayton, though I'm not from there.

I was curious about that. Thanks for letting me know! Those 150 (which may be closer to 130, but hopefully is up to 300 by the end of the academic year) are for a soup kitchen, voter registration on-campus, a high quality weeklong service-learning program in South America, non-clinical hospital volunteering (administrative, no patient contact), and mentoring students in the Biology department.

The soup kitchen and hospital volunteering hours are helpful. You should accumulate 150+ hours of similar activities before you apply. Otherwise, you could be screened out at many schools. I suggest these schools with your stats:
  1. Toledo, Wright State, NeoMed (Safety)
  2. WVU (Safety)
  3. Drexel (Target)
  4. George Washington (Target)
