Hi all,
I am posting this on behalf of my significant other; he does not have an SDN account but refuses to seek help from any advisors. With that, I am going to take one for the team because we are planning on applying as a couple, and I need to see where he truly stands so we can plan our next steps accordingly.

Thank you so much for your help, everyone. I've been a lurker for 2+ years now and y'all have been like a distant family to me.

1. cGPA/sGPA: 3.99/3.99
2. MCAT score: 517
3. State of residence: OH
4. Ethnicity and/or race: White (yes, he is worried that he is "just another mediocre white male")
5. Undergraduate institution: T40 university with a degree in Economics, graduated May 2022
6. Clinical experience (volunteer and non-volunteer):
- General hospital volunteering - 250 hrs, 2+ yrs
- Hospice volunteering - 20 hrs, 1 summer
7. Research experience and productivity:
- Clinical research coordinator at large university medical center - GAP YEAR JOB
- Psychology lab at undergraduate institution - 1 year
- Independent research regarding economics in healthcare with professor supervisor and presented research to university health policy center - 1 semester
- Health policy research - 1 semester
8. Shadowing experience and specialties represented:
- Critical care - 100 hrs, have shadowed during overnight shifts
- Cardiothoracic surgery - 10 hrs
- Endocrinology - 15 hrs
- Neurology - 20 hrs
9. Non-clinical volunteering:
- Camp counselor for underserved youth - 75 hrs, 1 summer
- Crisis Text Line Counselor - have not started yet, but will accrue 200+ hrs by matriculation
10. Other extracurricular activities (including athletics, military service, gap year activities, leadership, teaching, etc):
- Internship at local community hospital in the financial department, studied/examined all of hospital budgets, analyzed data, etc. - 1 summer
- Founding treasurer/executive member for school organization, managed all of club's funding - 1 yr
- Organic Chemistry Lab I TA (paid) - 1 semester
- Lego maniac (like realllyyyy obsessed with legos) as a hobby
11. Relevant honors or awards:
- $3000 merit scholarship awarded by major department
12. Anything else not listed you think might be important: super passionate about the intersection between economics and healthcare, and have had a substantial amount of experience delving into it. Seriously considering pursuing an MD/MBA, and is interested in hospital leadership or healthcare policy

My boyfriend is worried that his "low" MCAT score and mediocre ECs will not earn him an acceptance or an interview from his top choice T20 schools.

Here is the list of schools that he knows for sure he is applying to, but he is not sure where else he can apply. Does he have a shot at T20s? Any response/advice, including additional schools he can apply to, would be extremely appreciated.

IS:
OSU
Toledo
Neomed
Wright State (Boonshoft)
Cincinnati
Case Western/Cleveland Clinic

OOS:
Boston University
Sidney Kimmel (Jefferson)
UVA
Pitt
Emory

Thank you so much again, everyone!

Thank you so much! @Faha
Are his ECs and MCAT genuinely good enough for Vanderbilt, NYU, and Northwestern? Those are actually a few of his dream schools and it would be super encouraging for him to tell him that they are.

GPA and MCAT are competitive. Only weakness is low non clinical volunteering hours.

Smack your boy upside the head. And tell him to work on his self-esteem cuz he's a rockstar.

List will follow. I'm out shopping with the misses right now.
@Goro I will make sure to do that haha! Thank you so much.

@Faha Thank you so much for letting me know! I will relay this information to him, which should give him a motivation/self-confidence boost.

I'm a bit worried about his unwillingness to get help from advisors or us. This won't help him succeed should he joins the collaborative community that healthcare/medicine is. His success will rely on maintaining very strong relationships with mentors and champions, and I am sure this person will be begging for help when it comes to getting to the next step of residency. No one goes through medical school or training alone, even if you are significantly attached.

He needs much more face-to-face non-clinical community service where he demonstrates he can be comfortable in uncomfortable settings working with people completely unlike himself. Is he thinking about HEOR, which could explain his MBA itch? Why not pursue an MHA instead of an MD if he really isn't that interested in direct patient care? If anything this should dictate his career direction and school choices.

I suggest:

I agree with Goro’s list. The Ohio schools and schools such as Jefferson, USF, Rochester and Hofstra provide a broad base. Your SO can pick and choose from the NYU, Harvard, Yale type schools to get it down to around 35 total. If he has no preferences, here is a pre-trimmed version:
