Updated post now that I have a temp school list + closer to the app cycle! I've tried my best to amplify my food bank hours (started in January), thanks to the advice from my prior post. Please don't quote anything above the questions!
1. Demographics
ORM, F
CA
T20, public
cGPA: 3.98
sGPA: 3.94-97 (unsure yet because I have to figure out which of my upper divs AAMC will actually classify as BCPM)
Note for GPA: 4.0 throughout college, the dip is due to a B in a CC class I took in high school
MCAT: 525 (132/130/132/131)
Major is biology-tangent, some interdisciplinary focus (a little like public health I guess)
2. Research Experience
~600 hrs, split between 3 labs into 150/50/300 (first two labs have a presentation for my school's research week, last one no productivity). Labs are all on different topics (let me know if you would like specifics).
~120 hrs, summer internship on environmental topic (powerpoint presentation to staff members/other interested parties at the end)
3. Clinical Experience
~1000 hrs, medical scribe for a concierge practice
330 hrs, hospital volunteering
~100 hrs, shadowing a PCP
4. Non-Clinical Experience
200 hrs, crisis text line counselor (virtual)
~90 hrs, helping local kids at a writing non-profit org
~140 hrs (by June), food banks. These hours are across 4 different food banks/pantries, as some only have limited volunteer hours every week/month.
~20 hrs, food recovery (+ leadership in this activity, but hours may not be significant enough to include?)
5. Other
No awards, just the basic honors list stuff
~450 hrs, policy club (involved all four years, non-VP/president board member for three)
~200 hrs, mentorship organization targeting immigrant/first-gen pre-health individuals (involved two years, leadership position for 1.5)
~100 hrs, involved in a life science club for second and third year
~900 hrs non-academic student job in food service
LORS: two science, one major, one non-science, one scribe doctor (MD), PI for research
A few questions I have:
1) It looks like with the three labs I was in + research internship, I'll have 4 research activities on my activity list. Is this too much, especially if I'm applying MD? My hours are not too high in all of them, but I'm not sure if this will demonstrate a lack of commitment. My issue is that for the two labs I spent less time in, I did presentations for (just for the research week at my school, but presentations nonetheless), so I do think it's good to include them.
2) Would it be looked down upon if I combine those four food banks into one activity? I will have significantly more hours in one specific food bank (looking at around 100), but I want to include every hour I can get in this activity. I'm also thinking about adding the food recovery thing to my food bank/pantry volunteering activity, would this be okay? I'm basically going around to farmer's markets, recovering produce to give to food banks/community organizations hosting food drives.
Temporary school list (I am a FAP recipient, targeting 30-40 schools):
UCSF, UCLA, UCSD, UCI, UCD (? I was born in norcal but only lived there for a few years, so I don't think this is considered a tie?), Kaiser, WashU, Einstein, NYU Grossman, USC, Emory, UVA, Dartmouth, Hopkins, Northwestern, Duke, Penn, Vanderbilt, Pritzker, Icahn, Columbia, Brown
Unsure about the following: Stony Brook, Miami, Baylor, UTSW, Tufts, UCF, UMD, USF Morsani, Michigan, Cornell, Yale, Rochester, UMass, Mayo (which one?), BU
I don't think I have enough research for the likes of Harvard/Stanford, but also trying to avoid the service-heavy schools while not going too low, since I may get yield protected.
Thank you so much in advance!
