Hi all, I'm applying this upcoming cycle and would really appreciate some feedback on my school list and overall application. I’m graduating college in 3 years (applying after my second year without a gap year), and the whole process is quite overwhelming. Any advice would be appreciated!
Academics:
cGPA: 3.77 / sGPA: 3.72
MCAT: 512 (128/126/128/130)
Demographics
State of residence: CA
Race: ORM (Asian female)
Undergrad: T20
Clinical Experience
- hospital volunteer (acc had direct patient contact, fed patients, etc): 175 hrs
- emt (ride-along + work hours): 85 hrs (+ 550 hrs anticipated)
- ma (primary care/gastro): 150 hrs
Research Experience
- clinical research (1 pub in progress): 400 hrs (+ 450 hrs anticipated)
- 1 pub in journal with IF ~5-6 (high school project that continued into part of freshman year)
Shadowing Experience
75 hrs (primary care, pulmonology, surgery, oncology, critical care)
Non-clinical volunteering
- tutor english to underprivileged foreign students: 100 hrs (+ 100 hrs anticipated)
- assisted living facility volunteer (social activities with residents): 125 hrs (+ 100 hrs anticipated)
- cultural events committee volunteer (organizing large community events 3x/year): 200 hrs (+ 100 hrs anticipated)
- organize donation drives for local homeless shelter: 50 hrs (+ 100 hrs anticipated)
- meals on wheels social call volunteer: 50 hrs (+ 150 hrs anticipated)
ECs
- ta for science lab: 360 hrs (+ 120 hrs hrs anticipated)
- graphic designer (marketing materials for a small business): 100 hrs (+ 50 hrs anticipated)
- yoga and meditation: 150 hrs
LoRs: I think my letters from a science prof and my PI will be strong, but the ones from my non-science prof and other science prof may be average (I took the class a while ago).
School List: UCSF, UCLA, UMich, Case Western, Pitt, UCSD, Keck, Kaiser, UCI, BU, Emory, Einstein, UNC (?), Ohio State, Sydney Kimmel, UMD, UCD (i'm from norcal), Rutgers, Rush, Penn State, Wake Forest, UMiami, Tufts, Tulane, Drexel, Rosalind Franklin, UIC, Georgetown, UCR (went to undergrad in socal), CUSM, Drexel
I'm a bit worried about the competitiveness of my application—specifically that my GPA and MCAT may be on the lower side. I recently began volunteering with Meals on Wheels and organizing donations within last month and this month, so I'm concerned it might appear last-minute. I also started my EMT job this month (though I did ride-alongs a couple months ago which I will be listing) and was wondering if my clinical hours may be low. I’d really appreciate any feedback, especially in helping refine my school list and getting a sense of whether I have a reasonable chance this cycle. Thank you for your time and thoughts!
