In Summary:
I don't have a ton of clinical experience. May get some paid clinical as a PCT but will be projected hours. Need school list feedback with this in mind

Welcome to the forums.

What did you do for 300 hours of hospital volunteering?

Your lack of service orientation hours will be a challenge. You should have 150 hours of food distribution, shelter volunteer, job/tax preparation, legal support, transportation services, or housing rehabilitation before you submit your application; otherwise your application is at risk of getting screened out at most schools.. Tutoring/mentoring is an academic activity that every prehealth applicant has, so it doesn't help you stand out. For brand-name schools outside of Texas, you need 250 hours to stay on pace with other applicants.

If you get over the service orientation deficiency, your metrics should garner attention at your in-state programs. Be aware many Texas schools favor those from around their state region with a strong commitment to serving their home communities they grew up in. It's not clear you have that, but it will be a factor. That said, do you have zero primary care exposure?

I was mainly doing patient transport and rounding on patient rooms (ie giving them water, blankets, etc.). Don't have any primary care shadowing but can def get some.

Wouldn’t be surprised if you lucked into Baylor or UTSW due to MCAT, but i wouldn’t bank on it. Likely end up at solid MD instate. At least on what you portrayed in the WAMC, you are very cookie cutter and lack a “spike” so it might be easy for you to be looked over.

I also think those OOS schools might end up a donation (and aren’t really better than the Texas schools anyway), I would just keep it instate. IMO the only reason to apply out is if u specifically want to leave Texas, go to T20, or have ties OOS.

Should I take a gap year?

Yes, you desperately need some paid clinical experience to prove you actually know what it’s like to care for patients. Volunteering is an incredibly passive form of clinical experience that does not teach you much.

Would you actually consider skipping applying this cycle? It's not a shame if you took a gap year; plenty of other applicants have done this and successfully gotten into medical school having acquired a thousand or more hours of insight into the profession and into community service needs.

No one's stopping you from going ahead. Our advice is probabilistic, and you could present yourself well enough to get an offer. We just point out the elements of your profile that might make you disappointed if things don't go the way you expect.

I think if u want the “name brand” schools, yes. If you just want to be a doc, then I would just shoot my shot. Can’t ever guarantee anything tho
