Exactly one month before my MCAT, my father lost his second job. He is a public school teacher and unfortunately does not get paid in the summer, which meant I had to essentially stop studying and dedicate a majority of my time to working my three jobs because my family will have 0 income for 3 months. I will have to pay their mortgage, bills, groceries, etc. until the schoolyear starts up again ON TOP of my applications. I took 3 of the AAMC FLs and got a 495 with the exact same breakdown each time. I also worked throughout undergrad because I had to pay to support myself through college.
- cGPA of 3.88.
- I tested 5/24, I do not have my score but it will most likely be low because of the inability to study. Breakdown for all 3 FLs were 124 BB, 122 CARS, 124 CP, 125 P/S
- Illinois
- I am a Middle Eastern woman
- University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
- I work as a CNA at a hospital in Champaign, I have about 500 clinical hours
- Electrochemistry Research Lab: about 2000 research hours. After graduating, my PI offered to keep me as a post-bacc so I am still working in the research lab now and will be for a majority of the summer. I also wrote a senior thesis and am a co-author on a paper that is submitted to an ACS journal.
- I do not have any shadowing experience but I do work as a CNA on CVICU at my hospital so I interact with PAs, nurses, physicians, medial students, residents etc. everyday
- Food Pantry: 100 volunteer hours that was associated with a mosque in Champaign, so almost all the volunteers were Middle Eastern/Arab American, which made me feel closer to my community.
- Leadership experience: A former instructor of mine and I started the "Speaking Center" at our university since a lot of other universities have this resource and we did not. I was the only speech consultant for the first year so I built this resource from the ground up, which involved creating materials for students to reference, organizing and hosting workshops, and meeting with students for one-on-one consultations to address any speech/presentation needs.
- Scholarship for Undergraduate Summer Research
- I think it might be important to mention I think I have really strong letters of recommendation: one from my PI who also was my professor for inorganic chemistry, my instructor who I started the Speaking Center with, my Spanish professor, my genetics professor, the charge nurse on CVICU at the hospital I work at, and the district manager at my restaurant.
